If you can't get that franchise player, you keep drafting until you do. Simple.
What you don't do is keep Kessel on a huge contract screwing around chasing 8th place every year. That just delays the inevitable.
Who said anything about what the Leafs gave up to get Kessel? Absolutely nobody said that what they gave up for Kessel needs to be exactly what they get in return for him. The point of trading Kessel is to get as many top prospects and picks in return for him and allowing the team to draft as high as possible instead of watching him walk for nothing or get overpaid to stay and keep this team mediocre. - Two_For_Truth
delays us from aquring any free agents that may help improve the team...like say a getzlaf or a perry for example.
these guys are not exactly ancient...you could easily turn it around with one of them, and get lucky with a couple late firsts and early second/third round picks...
zetterberg, datsyuk, grabovski were all in the later round 4-7.
it happens, more often than not.

That's wrong. What's the point of treading water and hanging on to talent that costs you more than it's worth?
If you want to get as much talent as you can, you bomb a few seasons and hit the draft table really hard. That gives you elite level talent, 18 to 20 year old players, on ELC and gives you a lot more time and flexibility.
- Two_For_Truth
As per my posts to Tony Fernandez, I don't have a problem with that line of thinking. It's a different way of getting as much talent as you can. I'm just rejecting the notion of "building around."
Ultimately, though, I don't think you'd ever get enough for Kessel in a trade to make it worthwhile. Columbus isn't going to trade for him. You'll get a 1st rounder for him, but it's going to be in the 20-30 range.
That was before they knew who or what Scotty Bowman was capable of. Unless you can find somebody to do that with Kessel, the point still stands; the Leafs need to find the right guy to build around. - Two_For_Truth
I was going to write something about this, but instead I'll just sit back and wonder what you would say if somebody else on this board wrote that.
I'm guessing your reply would have earned you another 15 month ban. |

A whole post of personal jabs.
So you're not here as much as I am, but know exactly now often im on by not being here. Convincing. See as how you resorted to this tirade, I can see why heart rates and internet tough guys was something you would bring up. - systemtool
If you're gonna cry over what I said, then cry, but there's no need to act indignant and shocked. Jesus Christ, did I just just drive home the point that whenever I'm on commenting, you're there, and when I'm just browsing through, you're there? Your ankle is shot, which also helps point to the fact that you live on these boards; I'm betting the other people in this thread can attest to you being on here the majority of the day/week/month. You just sound petty |

I'm not arguing against the tank and draft strategy.
I'm just irked by the whole "build around" notion - which so far nobody has been able to define for me.
You get as many good players as you can. If you choose to do that by tanking and drafting high, go for it.
But I reject the idea that you "build a team" around a guy. Whether you have Player A or Player B, you still try to get the next best player you can. - Atomic Wedgie
When I say "build around" a guy, I'm talking about a constant, long term, central figure who you can depend on for leadership and results. You know as well as anybody that Toronto needs to have "a guy". Whether it was Sundin, Gilmour, Clark, Sittler, Keon, Armstrong etc. the Leafs have always had "that guy" who was the captain. The face of the franchise. The guy the team revolves around. The guy who can carry the team, who leads the team etc.
Every successful team in the NHL has had one of these guys, if not more than one guy, but at least one to start with. I'm not saying the Leafs have to limit themselves to just one guy. Hell, I'll take an army of franchise players like the Oilers seem to be doing. But it has to be at least one to start with.
"That guy" isn't Kessel. It's not Phaneuf. These are things you yourself have said many times. This franchise, this market and this team needs it. Once you have "that guy", the other pieces can start to fall into place. But it has to start somewhere in this market. It's just absolutely necessary. |

does anyone think that if Burke traded for Malkin in 2008 instead of Kessel, the leafs would have made the playoffs in the past 4 seasons?
completely hypothetical of course |

Thanks I'm done with this conversation; I have a feeling you'll post something in response to this to get an extra shot in at me. I'm able to stop posting when I want because I don't have any ties here, and could care less what you say. Hopefully your leg gets better |

I think a large majority would rather crosby on their team, he still looks a little rusty right now though |

I think it would vary from continent to continent, but Don Cherry's answer would be "Mike Zigomanis". |
