The young kids are looking really good this season, the Oilers will be good for years to come.

Better recheck the replay Richard. At first I thought it was Whitney that was at fault for the goal aginst, but he actually tied up his man. Nuge is the one that lost his check in front of the net.

I only got to see the third period. Oil sat back and did not look good.

I do not agree with your line up suggestion. In my opinion Yak with Hall and gags would be no good. Although Hemsky sucked bag again tonight from what I saw.

- Iggysbff

I agree. I guess you have to try it, but I don't think a hall-gagner-yakupov line would be successful. Hall and yakupov I think play too similar games, at least the yakupov of junior, he's not playing like himself yet up here.

5-on-5 couldn't score, but they drew penalties. Not sure I'd complain about 5-on-5 play when the Oilers are getting chances taken away from them, but then capitialize on the PP.

I see that being a problem if they make the playoffs tho.

Maybe, but I really don't care. Making the playoffs is an accomplishment in itself.

The point I was making was there probably would've been ES goals, but the Avs took a penalty to stop the chances. Sure it's not as good as scoring a goal at ES, but it's not like we are sitting there not generating offensive chances at ES.

I'd be far more concerned if we were only scoring on the PP and our goals were a result of the other team taking penalties in our zone.

People need to relax and remember we are only 5 games into the season. As for Richard and other going on about our 2nd line being awful, -10, etc.. People need to remember that Hall\RNH\Eberle played together last year, played together in the AHL and are playing together now, they know each other, what they do, where they will be etc. Hemsky\Gagner\Yak don't have that chemistry yet. Yak is a rookie and during the offseason they played on different teams. As for being the defensive problem Rich has stated, they were a combined -6 in the 1st game. Its the first game and we won it so who really cares. The next game they were a combined -5, well if anyone watched that game we were lucky all of our lines weren't a combined -5 and I will chalk that up on being the unfortunate line on during those goals. Since then they have been a combined +1. They have gotten better and will get better as time goes on and they get use to each other. If you want to compare our 1st line was a combined 0 the last 3 games. They seem pretty even in the +/-
After the SJ blowout the team has been looking better and playing better defensively, only 1 loss in the last 3 games and if they wouldn't of counted that 1st goal Calgary got who knows (Not trying to take the win away from Calgary) After lastnights game we are now 8th in PK and 2nd in PP, that is huge, both our special teams are working well.
The only issue I have with our forward lines is Smyth. Sorry to say it as I was a fan of his years back but he has to go. I just don't see any part of his game that is benefical to the team. Hartikainen, PRV and Petrell's play the last couple of games have earned them spots in mind and definitely over Smyth and when Jones comes back where does Smyth really fit in.
As for Horcoff and Belanger, as much as it would be nice to see them get points, if we took both or even one of them off our roster our PK would be well below 8th and chances are we would be under a 500 club.
I am more worried about fine tuning our defense and possible our goaltending, depending how these next 10 games go and how Dubnyk plays.

Yakupov is a sniper? BS.

I've only watched him in the WJ and a few highlights of KHL and the NHL season but the guy passes first. Even tonight, he's in the slot, gets a pass and FREAKING PASSES IT TO HEMSKY.

I'm afraid the brief on Yak is deceiving. He's a strong skater, tries to be a team first guy to his detriment. Shoot the (frank)ing puck, that's his job.

- BigDre

This! Yak made some awesome passes last night but I felt he was too fast for his company in passes... and he may look confused but many would when you are skating with Hemsky...

It would seem that Kruger is still tinkering and putting pieces together and I like it. I couldn't agree more with Clouts in that Hartikainnen was one of the most effective players in the game, he was absolutely relentless on the boards and behind the net. At one point he was tripped, tried to move the puck with his stick, then his feet, then his hands...I thought he might start biting people he was so intense on the boards! haha I just think that he is a very important piece to the future of this team...I hope so anyway.

Paajarvi played well too I thought. He has the hands and skill I think, but there seems to be a confidence issue there. His level of compete has improved tremendously however and as long as that's there, he is very useful.

Horcoff sucks beyond reason. He is completely out of his league out there. I am not kidding whatsoever when I say that I personally think I could lace em up again and go out and do the same things Horcoff does. Up the ice, down the ice, goal-side of your man, get to the slot, chip it in chip it out...OMG I'm tired...make a smart line change. That's all he ever does...he's useless and I would buy him out if he got paid $700,000. SMytty isn't much better though, and the nostalgia thing still has some legs I guess. I have a soft spot for Smytty, but yeah, repeat the Horcoff rant and add his name.

Whitney just needs to step it up for 5games and then please package that donkey outta town. It's one thing to be slow with your feet as a Dman, but he is also playing "slow in the head". Bad decisions are happening more than good ones and he seems to be avoiding body contact...when an effective Dman should crave it.

The rest of the team is clicking and I'm generally very happy with it. We're never going to love all 20 players, but all in all this squad is doing well.

Dubnyk scares the life outta me, but his positives outweigh the negatives so far.

and is it me, or does Belanger just not "fit" on this team? I can't picture him at the table with the others when they go out for beers. If your 10-12th player doesn't gel with the rest of the team, you get rid of him.

Good post especially the Paajarvi part.

Anybody could have scored Hemsky's goal it was nothing special. Eberle's goal on the other hand, only a select few can make that shot. I wonder if all the people who work off the fancy stats (Jonathan Willis) who were talking about how Eberle will never reach the numbers he did last season are second guessing themselves.

I'll clarify a bit about my feelings on Belanger...

The Oilers can't have two Belangers. Right now, we do. One is named Horcoff, the other is named Belanger. Ideally, the Oilers would have a Belanger-type player on their third line (provided he could chip in 20-30pts per season), and a big, mean freak at the 4th line center. The Oilers lack toughness and require a very violent 4th line to stick out there to keep people from touching our superkids.

If our 1st and 2nd line centers are 50% at face-offs, I am okay with keeping Belanger next season and dumping Horcoff to bring in the right 4th line guy.

- Maxbone

This is what I don't understand about you. We can't have 2 Belanger's? You do realize that there are 2 PK units and we need centers that are strong both in the circle and defensively for each of those PK units. Lets go back to being the worst team in faceoffs and PK, that worked great for us, #1 pick here we come...

I don't want to look for the post you quoted, but you really think Willis is going to do that Ben? Did you notice how when talking about Eberle they forgot to mention Jones? A player who they ripped for the same thing. Nope instead he chooses (frank)ing Brule who had mental issues and injury issues.
