I thought it was cause if the weather... but if it were a 1 year team which I believe he is on with NYI and WHitney has a 1 year = both on last years... it could work to our favor like Spacek... and basically it evens out we might get the better player but Lubo does not want to play with NYI...
- saskoil21

I don't know would Lubo even wants to play for edm. It's really does edm see themselves resigning Whitney. I don't see it.

Whitney and bulin and prv for Lubo and Nabokov and nino.

You obviously missed the highlight reel goal by Yaks last night or you would not be talking trash like that...

Not worth much discussion. He'll savour that win and point at it even as the Flames embark further down the drain.

Serious question: Is anyone here concerned about the Oilers lack of ability to score 5 on 5? Seem to me it might suggest they are too small to penetrate the offensive zone and generate legit scoring chances. This could especially be a problem if they were to make the playoffs.

Thoughts?

I think that theyre penetrating alright and tending to draw penalties when they do. They're getting a ton of chances 5 on 5. As long as they continue to do that the goals will come. Still too early to worry about it.

Oh most definitely. As they're playing right now, even if they were to squeak into the playoffs, they'd get bounced by LA or any team with any scrap of toughness really.

I just hope they're in the hunt by the deadline so we can add through trades.

Ya well the good news is that their peeper is off the charts. Still weird though, you think they would be able to pop a couple here and there. Although I watched the game last night and they did have some good chances.

Ya LA is big and strong, that would be an awful match up for the Oilers. Or a team like the Bruins. Too bad they couldn't get O'Reilly. I wish the Flames would put a package together for him too but I doubt the Avs are willing to send him somewhere within the division.

When is Jones back? This really makes things a tad messy... Likely MPS back to AHL then?? I think he would learn more in a 3rd line role and his size and speed he has used more- maybe he will benefit more working on a line with Harti as we saw last night it cant hurt...
- saskoil21

Honestly...

When Jones is back I'd like to see him on line 2 with Yak and Gags. Put Hemmer down with Smytty and Horc. Leave MPS/Belanger/Harti (Petrell) on the 4th.

Did you even watch the game Cloutier?

How can you call the first line 'one of the best in hockey' when they didn't even score an EV goal?

How can you call both PP units 'brilliant' when neither of them could even get set up on, I believe, 2 of the PP.

Gagner should be scratched?? I don't even need to comment on this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the team so far but your assessment is completely wrong. I assume you are just trying to piss people off so they comment (like I am doing) and bump up your readership.

I guess integrity isn't something you value.

You would know something about penetrating......boys that is.
Agreed however, not being able to score 5 on 5 five games into the season isn't cause to push the panic button. With their sick powerplay as long as they keep getting chances 5 on 5 and putting pressure on teams they will draw penalties and score goals, plus with the NHL calling penalties for looking at the puck funny this season they will get their pp chances.

3 PPG (4th an EN). That is the only thing that matters. This team scores on the PP. 2nd in the NHL behind only the thus-far rmapaging SJ Sharks. That is brilliant. Nuff said.

Sooooooooo scoring on 4 of 6 powerplays and being ranked number 2 in the league at 35.7 percent is not brilliant because they couldn't get set up on 2 powerplays??? What qualifies as brilliant then? Being 100% on the PP 100% of the time? Perhaps your standards are too high chief.

I think what he is trying to say is that their PP isn't as good as the results show. Just like their 5 on 5 play probably isn't as bad as their stats show.

Yeah, O'Reilly would be great, but it's not going to happen for us. Gagner's play is pretty good to start the season, but if we're going to have two slight, brainiac top6 centres, we'll need the wings to amp up the physical play.

I don't know if toughness is as big a factor as being able to cut through mediocre to weak defences like butter. So basically LA, San Jose, Chicago, and a healthy Vancouver in that sense. St Louis is similar plus they play terrific defensively so they'd be tough. We played well against Chicago last year but a 7 game series with our current defensive inabilities is nearly suicide.

Please explain how it is not as good as the results show??? Because they couldn't get set up on two PP's??? Typically when a team does not get set up on a PP, they either A-just shat the bed or B- the other teams PK was particularly good. The results speak for themselves on the PP. Don't be hating cause they are brilliant on the PP

What game where you watching Rich?? Gagner was fantastic. His defense definatly needs some work but he currently has the most hustle on the team. Whitney was good. He gets stuck looking like a goat simply because he is constantly having to move out of position to cover up for either Potter or Fistric who are both trash. That goal was RNH's fault and not Whitney's, Whitney picked up his guy and RNH played it lazy.

Yak/Gags/Hemmer look pretty good for only playing 5 games together. Leave them be, and they'll continue to improve. I love the line. Aside from Potter/Fistric, Petry has to be the worst Dman on the team. He is constantly out of position and is making Smid look bad because of it.

Smyth, Horcoff, and Petrell are absolutly brutal. They are supposed to be a shutdown line but they are far too slow. Belanger and Hartikanen should be moved up in the depth chart. We need a Brent Seabrook / Dan Hamhuis type of Dman to really shore up the back end.

Do you mean cut through our weak defense? I agree.

I think this will be a big year for maturing as a defensive unit (forwards and D alike). I just hope to be in the running by the TDL to add a stalwart or two. This could be the year that the likes of Reider, Hamilton, Lander, Pitlick, and picks 2nd round onward go to bring in an impact depth player or two.
