Its a limited NTC/NMC which probably means they wont send him down, and he either gave a list of a bunch of teams he would go to and/or wont go to. They'll have no problems dealing him if it comes to that. - systemtool
The situation with Kessel is at least a year away where the prospect of trading him would come into play.
Not sure why we are even discussing this.
He's our most valuable asset right now. I'm sure Nonnis will address his situation in the summer time and get an indication if he will resign and if so, what it would take to resign him.
Until then........ chill out folks. |

Agreed, it just frustrates the hell out of me when the ENTIRE day on local sports talk radio is dedicated to discussing this. It's amazing how thick the local media can be. |

not really.. after this year the modified NMC comes into effect - Dozzer
I've been unable to find details of the actual clause, but everyone lists it as "limited."
Judging by other deals, i would suspect that if the Leafs don't make the playoffs this year (which they won't, by the way) that clause will either not come into effect or will be as weak as Phil's backchecking.
In other words, my advice is still fantastic. |

The media needs to generate some kind of story in order for the listeners to tune in. The more people that tune in, the greater the ad revenues.
In other words, they create the noise to increase the bottom line. |

I think he has more value now with a year remaining on his contract + u dont have to deal with his NTC..
One thing for certain Nonis should at least try to find out where Kessel stands in terms of re-signing before the NTC kicks in this summer..
I dont think anyone is in a hurry to trade Phil but if he's not signing than the Leafs have to get full value in return and that might not happen especially if they are limited with the # of teams they can deal with..

It is limited in the number of teams, not if they make the playoffs or not.
It is only for the one year, because of his RFA status. You cannot give a NTC/NMC on a contract for years that are RFA years. By giving Kessel the 5 year contract they essentially bought one of his UFA years. The last year, the one coming up has a limited NMC clause. |

I'm going to assume that Nonnis does his due diligence and does just that prior to July 1st. |

I can see one particular trading partner for the Leafs at the trade deadline. The Ducks. If the Ducks have not resigned Perry by the trade line, I'm thinking that they would jump at the opportunity to make a deal involving Kessel for Perry. The ducks in my opinion would have to include something else, since he will be a UFA whereas Kessel still has a year left. |

I would rather trade Kessel for some picks/prospects and try to sign Perry or Getz as a FA if thats remotely possible

Not a bad prospect pool at all, Reilly will make the team next year, he is the closest to being ready for the LEAFS. |

I'd rather keep Kessel and sign perry as a UFA. Would be nice to see what kessel could accomplish when he's not responsible for carrying the team.
Banking on UFA signings is a tough way to structure a team though. |

"If" they can't get Kessel signed they really should take the opportunity to target a centre. I wonder (hope) if the Avs would have an interest in Kessel. They're deep at centre.

The only possible way that deal is even considered is if Perry agrees to a contract extension with the Leafs prior to the trade. Which may or may not be legal. |
