with tk off the book and some others, i think 5mil for letang for 7 yrs and geno takes 9mil for 7yr.. hell ill give geno 9.5 but i dont know if they will give him more then sid...

looking at cap geek, there are so many people coming off the books and or in the last yr of their contract....

Letang would have to be drunk to sign for $5 mil a year. He is going to get $7 mil all day long (and could be more on the open market). Not only is he one of the top 5 most complete defensemen in the league, he's only 25 years old, and will have played for well under market value for the last three years of his current four year deal.

7-7.5M all day long.

That will be one of Shero's defining decisions as a GM of the Penguins, how exactly does the Letang contract scenario play out

Its going to sound crazy but Engelland is more irreplaceable organizationally than Despres. Its just the way the depth in the Pens system shakes out.

Engelland is a competent bottom pairing d man who is a legit modern day enforcer. Playable toughness.

- Gunner Staal

Very true... plus he is signed for one more season at less than $600k. To replace him, you'd pay 3 times as much in cap space and waste a roster spot. You'd have to add a cheap bottom pair defensemen, plus sign some worthless goon to be scratched for 60% of the games.

I just hope it's settled this off season, either extend him or trade him like Staal. I don't want to go into next season with that question mark, and the chance to get nothing for him.

That is why you have to wait and see what you have in the kitty as far as replacements before dealing all the D-prospects off. You have to hope Morrow, or Harrington, or Matta or Pouliott develop and could possibly fill the void IF Letang bolts. Not saying they will bring exactly what Letang brings immediately, but ...

Letang isn't singing for 5 million per. Not a chance.

Different type of player tho... its all about finding tangradi a team who can use him on 3rd line and make him a better net front presence... problem with pensnis we have too many 3rd liners and trying to slot him in a top 6 role.. apparently not all top 6 ahl'ers can be top 6 nhl'er

Not that I would want to trade him at all, but I'm wondering what exactly you get in return for Letang, who could be a pending free agent. If Staal brought XXX, XXX and XXX and the Pens were handcuffed because everyone knew the kid wanted to play with Eric in Carolina, what does Letang fetch?

So, a guy that has been a healthy scratch two out of four games for the COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS is a 100 times better player?

You could always sign him to 7M/yr and then trade him if d prospects pan out. Depending of course on NTC/NMC stuff.

His celebration is getting all the pub, but how about that eye hand coordination with the game on the line.

True... Shero seems like he only gives those NTC that a player can rule out 8 teams or whatever, not the complete Calgary Flames variety.

Ha, I know more about the Flames now than I ever wanted to. Its ugly, depressing, and maddening. They have done a flat out awful job since their Cup run.

I'm thinking 6 years, 42 million for Letang. Puts him at 31 when his contract is up, so he can sign another big deal to end his career. Plus, thats double what he is making now. Good deal for Letang, good deal for the Penguins. Shero is going to have to work some magic in the offseason. If Bennett comes up and is able to play well with either Crosby or Malkin, the Pens will have about 10 Mil under the cap to sign 1 top 6 guy and 4 bottom 6 guys.

There is a good chance he (Bennett) will be scratched. He def isnt in the line up here tonight and with the AHL all-star game coming up, rumor has it he may sit till after the break.

No it doesn't sound crazy at all. Trading him for Paajarvi sounds crazy. I'm just glad Shero is in charge, I trust him not to make bad decisions like that.
