I think in a broader slang sense of the term now it refers to more things than it originally did, like it's used to describe sarcasm, or also an unusually bad problem

PS I hope we see the same defensive and checking trends in the last three games. The odd man rushes allowed by the Wilson Leafs towards the end were just ridiculous. I would say that not only does irony deal with opposites, but also where the outcome is directly contrary to what would normally be expected.

The best example that I can come up with to explain true irony is telling people to imagine somebody who is knocked unconscious by a falling hard hat
