You are correct about the Neilson history lesson....but by JLO's account then every team that now waves towels at games, should be called out and then immediately stop the practice and create their own identity.
- Makita

In the game when Roger Nielson placed a white towel on the end of a hockey stick and raised it out over the players over the ice, the referee had actually, arguably I guess, made some pretty poor calls. If you knew your Canucks history (most current VCR fans do not) you would know that Mr. Nielson took ownership for pretty much everything he ever did. THe only place he ever laid blame was squarely on his own shoulders.

If you are comparing THAT, that man, that incident, to the ubsurd look on Vigneault's face when Burrows and Yappy make their idiotic gestures and take their misconducts, or when Bieksa drills someone after the whistle when they're not looking. If you are comparing those things...then I cannot argue with you. You will never see it. In fact, I do believe you are proving my exact point.

I must, of course, admit to some exaggeration. I don't think AV will be giving him much opportunity unfortunately. It's too bad because the Canucks need some younger (lesser paid too) players to contribute. Gillis has not (yet) been successful with his drafting.
- rdfred

I also thought that he was knocked around a bit last night, but he didn't let it distract him from doing what was expected of him. I am hoping that with the team injuries he will work himself into NHL game shape, and learn to take a hit or a (love tap) push and stay on his feet.

My big thing with Burrows is: it's entirely evident he's gotten the chance to play with the Sedins because he's a good fit. Chemistry is everything in the NHL, so when you're looking at whether he would bump similar good fits from their top line (say Brouwer and Ovechkin), you have to make huge assumptions about how Player X fits in to Line 1's chemistry on Team Y.

So the Burrows is a first liner conversation is kind of inane. In fact the whole concept of having ONE top line is going out the window. To push it further, the whole Top 6-Bottom 6 dichotomy is going out the window in the NHL.

- Morris

I agree with this, top 3 top 6 he is still a valuable player in either situation...and personally I could care less how he would fit on other teams top 6 because he is a canuck.

So in other words, if you do not accept my argument against your team it's your bias that's blinding you. You should be in politics.

If you want to see genuine hissy fits thrown at the refs look no further than Crosby. His game misconduct last night was gold.

To clarify, I think Burrows is a good player. As usual, the fans are over-valuing him. But really, what are fans supposed to do? undervalue their own players? lol Canuckland is just so annoying about it all, that's the issue. Burrows is a solid top six forward. There is no reason to hate on him just because the fans are unrealistic.

You are correct about your bias and you are even more correct about Crosby. I'm not talking about my previous arguments/opinions about the team and culture. I'm talking about an actual event that occured with Roger Nielson and the origin of your own tradition.

So, now that the whole Burrows situation is settled, did anyone catch the intermission interview with Iain MacIntyre and Cam Cole? (plus, who spells Ian with two i's?). I wonder if Gillis called up Cole to say WTF dude, you took me completely out of context there!

To paraphrase - The bit about already having a deal in place with a "mystery team" that has to "do something with another player" was basically something that had happened in the past. Gillis said that there were a number of offers from a number of teams, there was one offer that Gillis liked but that team needed to do something else first. Now, this offer could have happened several months ago, or last week, no one knows for sure. Cole justifies his article by noting that the quote was buried in the 27th paragraph of the article, and the MSM took it out of context.

I'm not talking about any of your arguments really, which are neither here nor there in importance. I'm talking about you. The guy who appeared out of nowhere without provocation to deliver a rather smug "telling it like it is" diatribe against a team and the city that supports that team which you clearly have issues with. Whether you feel it therapeutic because you're from BC or otherwise, it's unnecessary. Keep it to yourself.

Now I understand your vehement hate of the Canucks, I can remember when Gretzky was with the Oilers, man did I ever hate that whiny puke... phenomenal player...but we used to call him crybaby Gretzky, a well deserved nick-name.

Well truthfully, if I were Gillis, I'd never say anything like that, regardless of whether or not it's true. I'd say we've had offers, but none we consider to be worthy of accepting and leave it at that. Those types of comments only serve to piss off potential trading partners and make it harder on yourself.

lol, fair enough. To tell the truth I own a Canucks jersey from said Roger Nielson days. My family lives there so I have followed the team over the years. My brother always wants to argue/discuss hockey and he's a Canucks fan so that is the reason I check out this blog from time to time. For the past 4or5 years however, this strange arrogance and annoyance has emerged and I guess, yeah, it bothers me. It shouldn't stop you from enjoying and discussing your team however. You're right.

Yeah, I just thought it funny that the two Vancouver Sun guys were now trying to rationalize the comments by saying they thought they were really "no big deal" seeing as they were in the 27th paragraph of the article...

lol. I wouldn't call it hate. Let's reserve the hate for Calgary where the rivalry exists. The Canucks are more like an annoyance until they actually seriously compete. You've got a year maybe two, and then the window is closed (the loss to Boston must have been a tough one to swallow). The game seven loss for EDM was tough, but they weren't supposed to be there anyway. CGY is done, EDM, MIN, COL are on the rise...so it's now or never for you boys.

You'll have much more enjoyable and meaningful hockey conversations with several of the people in here with that kind of attitude

You're more than welcome to hate on the Canucks, as a rival fan, try not to lump us all into one small group based on what you see on an internet message board.

And just in case you missed it earlier...

I hope the Kings drop a 10 spot on the Oil tonight, Kopitar with the double hat trick!

LMAO, that's hilarious. The writing on the boards is fitting also. DOn't worry guys, I won't spend lots of time here. I just check Canucks updates sometimes and when I see statements like Burrows top ten winger or whatever...it annoys me.
