You need players who fit in the system.. the devils were great at finding them.

Det too.

Philly takes the best players available instead of the best player for the system.

If you crash the net you dont go get nathan gerbe. You get mike knuble.

Im a firm believer in finding the rught players. Not the best ones.

Herb brooks was a believer in that as well. He also came up with an incredible aystem to beat russia. With less talent.

- Flyersgod

You don't think the Flyers do that? Scott Laughton wasn't the most highly rated player on the board when they drafted him. But he was the best player on their board. They determine that based on what they see as organizational need, the player's potential and how he will fit in the team's plans moving forward.

People get all tweaked when they don't pick a defenseman, but ignore that a drafted defenseman rarely steps in immediately and plays at a high level.

As far as Herb Brooks, yes, he did have a system in place, that worked in one game. The NHL isn't one game and done. Before the Olympics, the USSR beat Team USA, who were using the same system, 10-3 at an exhibition at MSG.

Bieksa - $4.6m
Hamhuis - $4.5m
Gilbert - $4m
Giordano - $4.025m
Regehr - $4.020m
Ehrhoff - $4m
Hedman - $4m
Hainsey - $4.5m

To name a few. Coburn is worth the price the Flyers are paying him.

Skip, do you see some of the posts here? There are some upset, unstable fans, and this thread is the only shoulder they have to cry on. In the name of mercy, I say let them continue with the hyperbole and the internet grudges.

They have to tire themselves out eventually, right?

Where was Brooks' "system" when he coached in the NHL? I remember him being a real dud in the NHL.

I just find it funny hoe you guys discount systems. Why have a coach then? Have the gm fill out theroster card.

Im not referring to the draft. Im talking free agents. We are terrible at drafting dmen.. until that changes I'd rather they stick with centers.

If every team is starting at the same point.. why are we so rusty and other teams look a step ahwad of us?

The team is playing like crap, agreed. YYou're kidding yourself if you think systems are important.

the team has no number 1 goal scorer, its bad enough relying on simmonds voracek and hartsy and read and schenn to produce on a regular basis. they should have went after ryan or perry or nash. but homer wants to hold on to his young guys like theyre precious jewels. too bad he didnt feel the same way about richards and carts after he signed em to 12 yr deals or whatever. we need a 30+ bonafide goal scorer.

on the back end contract crazy homer signs to bryz to 5+, signs grossman long term while u still have mez makin 4 and coburn 4.5 so those 3 d man = roughly 12 mill against the cap....

I have no answers for that.

I wonder if we dont win cups because we dont believe in systems?

Maybe thats why we lose men in the dzone..

Part of the benefit of having a player of Giroux's caliber is that he makes players better so you don't need to spend extra money for players to play with him. Besides, how many "proven goal scorers" did LA have? Or Boston the year before? Goal scorers are much sexier than defensemen and grinders but that doesn't make them anymore valuable.

There needs to be a culture change in philly before we are ablr to win a cup.

Every dynasty had a system with the perfect players for it.

Det?
Colorado?
Nj?

Personally, I think it's a lack of cynicism and spite. The fans keep trying to give this to them, but they just don't take the hint!

All in non-salary cap eras as well. It would be tough to have Roy, Sakic, Forsberg, Bourque, Foote, Hejduk on the same team, some of them in their prime, and still build a quality team around them.

umm pretty sure LA had kopitar and carter who made significant impacts in the finals. and all that grit and grind is gonna go right out the window on 95 when homer signs G to 8 years 70 mil

I guess it all depends on how you define "proven". If Hartnell & Briere aren't "proven" then I'm not sure what else they have to "prove".
