They are not buying him out, First of all, they don't have to buy him out after this season they can wait an extra year if they needed to. Secondly would you want be the GM that has to ask ownership to cut a check for 45 mil or so, to let a guy walk away and choose where he plays next.

I understand he has a no trade clause, so right now he has a certain amount of say in where he plays, but if he was bought out, Gillis would have absolutely zero say in where he ends up.

Keep Luongo until the trade deadline, and if someone doesn't drastically overpay keep him until the offseason. Obviously you can't judge CS by one game but what if he has a rough start to the season? It will be harder to overcome in a shortened schedule. If the Leafs miss the playoffs again they would be a lot more desperate to deal over the summer than they are right now where anything could happen.
