It's kinda surprising that so many feel Vancity is "screwed" with their current cap situation.
The only pending RFA's that need raises next year are Weise, Tanev, and Schroeder. Qualifying them ensures they are Canuck property.
Pending UFA's are Malhotra,Raymond,Higgins,Lapierre,Ebbett,Volpatti,Alberts,Barker,Vandermeer
I only see Higgins and Lapierre returning, Raymond will be a part of any trade of Schneider or Luongo or not re-signed. Malhotra will likely retire due to his eye condition (feel quite badly for him) but that is the reality. Only D I see them bringing back is Barker if he plays well enough as a 5/6 D man. Connaughton or Corrado will play next year as well. Alberts / Vandermeer are expendable.
So at the start of all this, the Canucks currently have 3.9 Million in cap space next year.
Ballard will be bought out or traded.....add 4.2 million
Luongo/Schnedier trade ...... add 4.0 or 5.3 Million
So all told Canucks will have 12.1 or 13.4 Million in cap space next year. Kinda surprising when you do your research isnt it???

The flaw with your numbers is that you're not including ANY SALARY coming back in a Lu or Schneider trade, which just will not happen, especially since Gillis "is looking for roster players."
Right now Vancouver has $3,896,667 in cap space available for next season with only 14 under contract.
So let's assume that Ballard is bought out adding $4.2M in cap space, therefore giving Vancouver a total of $8,096,667 and 13 under contract.
Let's also assume that Luongo ($5.3M cap) is traded for a package of players that see's Vancouver adding two roster players with roughly the same as Lu's $5.3M cap hit (conservative), leaving Vancouver with the same cap space after Ballard's buyout, but an additional roster player has been added, therefore giving Vancouver $8,096,667 and 14 players under contract.
As you say, from the list that you provided only Higgins and Lapierre will most likely be resigned, with raises. Currently Higgins and Lappy carry a $2.9M cap
hit. With CONSERVATIVE raises, let's assume their combined cap hit will be $4M for next season. That leaves Vancouver with $4,096,667M in cap space with 16 under contract AND STILL 7 PLAYERS TO SIGN! That's not even close to 7 league minimum players
Even if Vancouver added entry level contracts, THEY'RE NOT EVEN COMING CLOSE to reaching the 2013 $64.3M cap!
So who is the second buyout, Booth's $4.25M? Sacrificing a "2nd liner" and giving Vancouver ~$8.35M to sign 8.
Vancouver is in bad shape, buddy. Even if Vancouver added 7/8 league minimum players to squeak under the cap, does that sound like a "contender" to you? It certainly doesn't leave them any room to improve come trade deadline either. Sorry to break it to you.

Its all how you spin it pal. I understand that being a Leaf fan you look at everything from the "worst possible" perspective but we dont do that out here. Van will be just fine with the cap....We can't afford to take the same $$ back in a Luongo trade so thats not gonna happen. I'll post this again in the summer when the cap goes down and Van is still under the cap........this is more likely scenario.
1) sedin sedin burrows - 16.7
2) booth kesler kassian - 10.1
3) hansen ======> need to re-sign lappierre and higgins who are making 1.0 and 1.9 respectively - don't see much of a raise if at all for either -- let's say they re-sign or other comparable players are signed for 3.5m so 3rd line is - 4.85
4) jensen schroeder and another 1m banger - 3m
forwards = 34.65
bieksa hamhuis - 9.1
edler garrison - 9.6
tanev + 1m #6dman - 2
d= 20.7
goalies
schneider lack - 4.75
that's a total of 60.1. leaves 4.4m to sign 3 players (or leaves 4.4m to absorb in money coming back from a luongo trade).
also contingent on a ballard buyout.

Kassian is an RFA 2014-2015....you can look that up.
Bought out players receive 2/3 of whats left on their contract and that doesnt count against the cap.
I'm sure Luongo gets traded and Canucks pick up some of his salary....but that doesnt count againts the cap either - Soonerorlater
True Kassian is an RFA in 14/15.
But if the Canucks pick up some of Luongo's salary ( I can't see them doing that) it would count against the cap, look at the Lombardi trade to Phoenix. |

Judging by the score tonight, Washington's logic for wanting Lu may go up 100%. Or they could try to get Thomas. I've always liked Thomas better. |
