gillis is in panic mode, he's just toying with the media to try and get some value out of the 'all star' he signed to a ridiculous contract, and then promoted as his backup all summer, essentially rendering him valueless.

this could literally go on all season, before gillis is forced to buy roberto out, as his one method of salvaging the cap doom he's implemented on the franchise.

Well, for a goalie who your entire fanbase is referring to as a backup, with the contract term and cap hit he carries, you're not going to get much more, especially since teams know that he could be had as a UFA this offseason when he gets bought out. The smart thing to do would have been to move him in the offseason without announcing you wanted to do so. Now, your return will be diminished day by day.
