I think Subban is better and has a higher ceiling than Del Zotto. I also think Del Zotto took less than he could have gotten.

Also, when Subban sees his team sign Max Pacioretty to a big money long term deal, I understand his position. I'd be fine of more GM's took a stand, but this could bite Bergevin.

He's probably looking at the Headman & Meyers deals as deals similar to what he wants in term & money

I think they wanted to keep him as cheap as possible but when others that are comparable in numbers got decent offers it killed any hope (not that it was much of one) from happening.

That's why I say if I am PK make me a better offer or I go to Europe & you can call me when you aren't wasting my time.

It's a dangerous game the Canadians are playing because other players they have that are up for new deals see how they are handling this situation.

They just re-signed Pacioretty to a long term, big money deal. Subban is every bit as important to the Habs future as he is.

I understand wanting to keep a guy cheap, but you have to walk a fine line, too. Lowball enough RFAs and you're going to go through this annually.

He's a free agent now, just restricted. Same situation as Jame Benn.
- Jsaquella

He can do what Ryan O'Reilly is doing getting paid to play in Europe while the Avs miss out on his services for taking this "stand" they seem so firm on. He isn't hurting 1 bit. PK should do the same to show them you won't pay me they will & I won't miss out on anything.

They could get him at close or even at $4 million just say then let's make it a 6 or 7 year deal so they get the better end of it long term especially if he continues to get better then it would look like he's underpaid

Can't blame him. Although the new Cap rules are going to make that tough. But that deal was crazy for Myers at his age. 10M signing bonus for a 22 year old player. Ridiculous.

Does he eventually become a UFA?

I wonder if Dallas is interested in Luongo. Maybe thats the team gillis was pretending to talk to...

If Subban develops, 4M a year, 3 or 4 years from now will be a bargain. It might be overpaying him now though. But that's the give and take.

I've only seen one case that was similar, but it involved a player under contract. I doubt Subban would hold out for years. He might eventually cave, and sign for less than he wants to, and tell the Habs to kiss his ass when he hits UFA in 3 years or whatever.

A player becomes a UFA at 27 years of age, or 7 Accrued Seasons.

I'm sure there was plenty of regret last year and even more anxiety this year because of that deal.

Think about that if they gave him a 6 plus year deal at that avg and he improves year after year they will actually be saving money. It's a give & take they should be jumping at not doing what seems like an insult.

Both sides are playing hardball. There seems to be a few RFAs that want the same kind of deals they would have received under the last CBA.

I have no idea what teams would be interested in Luongo. I'd assume Florida & Toronto. Not sure why Dallas, unless they've lost faith in Kari Lehtonen.

This is almost unprecedented. 3 pretty big RFA's holding out. Not a good precedent for the NHL.
