No, no, the great thing about Lupul is that he guarantees you continue the cycle of mediocrity for the next five years.

Oh this is fun.

So, given your ridiculous exaggeration, you must think Lupul can bring us a Cup if we just applied this little example to you right?

Right.

Ok, how about we admit that people have different opinions, and unless any of us have crystal balls that they're hiding, there is no way to tell who is going to be right.

They key is smart drafting and development, not high drafting. Retrospect would have Perry, Richards, Getzlaf and Parise taken ahead of Coburn, Jessiman and Nilsson. Gardiner, Karlsson and Eberle would be taken before Schenn, Filatov and Beach. The draft is a crapshoot, and while higher picks are often better than low picks, it's what you do with them than count.

- lumlums

Then get more and increase your chances in that crapshoot. The rewards are worth it.

Those who don't learn from history are damned to make the same mistakes again.
- Two_For_Truth

Only you would draw comparisons to resigning a 29 year old Lupul to a very respectable and tradeable contact with signing a worn down, beat up 32 year old Tucker or a completely overrated 31 year old McCabe to what were both ridiculously overpriced contracts complete with no trade clauses.

It seems so simple. The Oilers are doing it right as well. Though they lucked out getting the #1 pick last draft. If Burke wouldn't have traded Kessel and gone about a rebuild the proper way, the Leafs would be in better shape.
- woopstash

If the Leafs wouldn't have made that trade, yeah, they would have been in better shape - but not a world of difference. It's not like the Leafs traded the picks for something that has no value to them today. They got a perennial 30 goal scorer who was 6th overall in points last year - and is still only 25yrs old.

I am not defending the trade as I am sure the Leafs would like a do-over on that one but it's not like when the Jays traded Michael Young for Loaiza who had added no value to the Jays (can't think of a Hockey trade analogy right now).

Don't need a crystal ball to see this team is going nowhere in the next five years except in circles in the middle of the pack.

This is something the Leafs have never been good at doing and there isn't much to suggest that they suddenly got amazing at it recently.

As much as I would love the Leafs to somehow find amazing talent in he middle or late 1st round and in the 2nd rounds, they have never really been able to do it often enough or consistently enough to believe they can do it to the point where they can build a team around that concept.

The one thing that will help the Leafs however is getting higher picks and more picks. How do you do that? You trade guys to get more picks and odds are, you draft higher too.

Yup, completely different scenarios. Not like all three of them had career years and got signed to a long term deal by the Leafs. Never happened.

Seriously - try it.

Who is your cable provider?

Depends who is drafting them....Leafs seem to have a pretty dismal draft record.
Give them 3 first rounders and Detroit 1 - My money would be on Detroit walking away with the better player.

Not only that but as soon as one of those sure fire can't miss draft picks has a great year, trade him away because he'll never help the team do anything anyway.
