Ok look coming from a sens fan lupul is a quality hockey player why trade for something they may not materialize I think it's smart move to lock up someone who can points up every year
- arnpriorguy

And yet, it's better for the Leafs to take a guy like Lupul and trade him than it is to sign him and expect to get anything done in the five years they signed him for.

Down by 15. 10 minutes to go.

I should be turning it off and doing laundry and running out to the store to buy lunch for the kids tomorrow, but the couch won't let me.

- Atomic Wedgie

Oh, it's definitely the couch's fault

Mine gives me the same trouble

There was absolutely nothing wrong with McCabe.

He told JFJ flat-out that he couldn't sign a contract until his wife's health issues were sorted out. JFJ panicked and kept upping his offer.

Not McCabe's fault JFJ landed at $5.75 milly cap hit. Too bad idiot fans didn't realize this, and booed him out of town. We got Mike Van Injured in return, and all McCabe did was go on to be named captain of the Panthers.

Leafs should have kept him.

Hell, it's McCabe's fault Tucker got the big contract. Teams focused on McCabe so much, Tucker was wide open on the doorstep of every powerplay. That's why his point totals got elevated.

- Atomic Wedgie

Missing the point. Badly.

Leafs should have traded them both. Not resigned them.

Reactions if the Leafs drafted first this year...

McKinnon- "why'd we draft a small soft forward? Isn't Kessel enough?"
Barkov- "why'd we draft a euro, didn't we learn from Sundin?"
Monahan- "toughness over skill, COULDA HAD MCKINNON!"

- Feeling Glucky?

Oh this is fun.

So, given your ridiculous exaggeration, you must think Lupul can bring us a Cup if we just applied this little example to you right?

Right.

Hell yeah! That's how you win. As soon as a player enters their prime you trade him away because hell, the team will never do anything anyway! Bravo!

That's great for the Flyers. But what about teams that actually win the Cup? You know, like Pittsburgh and Chicago. How did they become so good? Oh right, the draft.

But yeah, overpaying for guys like Lupul is a great way to rebuild.

- woopstash

Are you simple... this is not an overpayment.

Yup, that's how the Leafs won the Cup with Tucker and McCabe.

Winners.

The great thing about trading Lupul is you get a guarantee that the guy you get for him will be better.

Same with McCabe, by the way.

No, no, the great thing about Lupul is that he guarantees you continue the cycle of mediocrity for the next five years.

What are we learning here kids?

That because NHL players in their 30s are a guarantee, there is no point in drafting and keeping youth?

Im down.

3 first for Luongo, since Luongo is the guarantee.

Thank god for idiots.

Ok, how about we admit that people have different opinions, and unless any of us have crystal balls that they're hiding, there is no way to tell who is going to be right.

They key is smart drafting and development, not high drafting. Retrospect would have Perry, Richards, Getzlaf and Parise taken ahead of Coburn, Jessiman and Nilsson. Gardiner, Karlsson and Eberle would be taken before Schenn, Filatov and Beach. The draft is a crapshoot, and while higher picks are often better than low picks, it's what you do with them than count.
