His points increase directly correlated with his increase in minutes. Lupul was playing 2nd/3rd line minutes elsewhere, #2 PP time. His minutes went up 30%, gets #1PP time, and points went up accordingly. not like Kulemin who had an unreal shooting % when he got 30.

Lupul's pts per minute played are pretty much consistent each season, including last yeat.

Lots of guys have a sick year and then go back down to earth. Just look at Rene Bourque, Mason Raymond, Mike Cammalleri, Shawn Horcoff, to name a few. I'm sure if I went all stat nerd I could've justified their seasons too.

Nope. Lupul is now a guaranteed 1st liner, point per game player until the end of his contract.

Thats my point though. They kept their picks and built patiently.

They gave their young kids top roles and here they are now. So why not trade Lupul, build properly and patiently. You just proved with the example above that it works.

I never said this team should tank. I said they should only have signed Lupul if the playoffs were a reality, and if/since its not, then you trade him to improve the future because the "now" isnt good enough.

- systemtool

no they didnt... they literally traded away their only player they drafted while tanking...

He was a point per game player last year. Enough with the negativity. He's a 1st liner. On a contending team, he would have a centre.

$5.25 milly may seem high, but name a guy who is better who you could get for less.

- Atomic Wedgie

That's the best part.... don't spend 5.25 on Lupul (who you know and seems to work here), save it for someone who may not become available and may not want to sign with you and will most certainly cost more than 5.25 and not be any better.

Seems like a plan.

I would rather sell assets like that, who are coming off career years, for a good return. This is because the Leafs are at least 5 years from contending.

I had the same opinion way back in the Tucker-powerplay-God year and the McCabe one of the best 5 D-men in the league year.

I wanted them to sell high. They didn't. How did that work out for them.

Its not the worst contract in the world but I'll be shocked if he regularly cracks 70pts over the course of it.

Also Lupul under Carlyle's system may be different than Lupul under the "we don't give a crap if you've never met your goalie" system.

Better off trading him, getting what you can for him and keep this train headed for 1st overall.

Didn't Carlyle basically take all his dumps on Lupul and Ryan back in Analheim?

The best divers are the guys that anticipate. That's how you tell a pro from a rookie. Guy is going to make a tackle in the box? Best jump over his leg and flip
- AdamFrench

(frank) I hate guys like that. Luckily I'm a fairly sizeable unit so if anybody tries that in the leagues I play in (and despite not being a pro league, this happens waaaay too often), I make sure that they stay down next time

Tucker and McCabe are perfect examples of players who capitalized on career years to stay in Toronto when the Leafs should have been rebuilding.

It's sad that needed to be explained to you.

Yup, one of the few. We could have Datsyuk, Malkin and Crosby and some people would complain that they're too soft, and why don't we have a tougher guy like Dustin Brown instead...

My old soccer coach used to "encourage" use to play dirtier against the wieners like that. "If they're gonna dive and get calls we might as well make it worth it"

McCabe is a perfect example of a guy booed out of town when he was still capable of playing hockey at a high level. Hence being Florida's captain.

This is funny, how many wingers, scratch that, how many first line wingers had over 65 points last year and how much did they make. Damned if you, damned if you don't in Leafland. Your first priority to your season ticket holders, fans & Owners is to win, not tank, you guys might not like that but that is the way it is, stop whining, sheesh.

That's an interesting comment.

When have the Leafs have a Crosby, Malkin or Datsyuk? Could this be because they trade away picks and don't sell high, but instead overvalue their own players that aren't winning them anything?
