Lupul is one of those guys.

They don't need an immediate replacement for Lupul. The assets they get back for him, if done properly, should take care of that in the long run.

Creating a hole? Losing Lupul isn't a big deal. They aren't going anywhere with him anyways. All you want to do is delay the inevitable and jump for joy in 8th place.

Trade away talent you know you have for talent you might be able to get.

They see Lupul in their long term plans, that's their professional opinion of him- a guy that brings enough to the team to be included in the long term plans. Whether you agree with that assessment or not is a different issue. But once you feel a guy falls into that category, you shouldn't trade him for anything less than a sure thing.

Doesn't fit your argument that Burke wasn't like JFJ by trying to make the playoffs and ignoring the future. It was only after he made this massive error did he change a little. But it doesn't make up for it.
