I thought there was only one compliance buyout next year. Then another the year after.
- prock

Not too sure about the compliance buyout details but I can't see Lu staying in Vancouver for the entire season. I doubt a deal is completed within a couple of weeks - most likely during a playoff push. If Ballard plays well enough, I'm sure someone would pick him up for a limited return.

I believe under the new CBA you have two buyouts which can be used as the teams see fit, one in the 2013 off season and one in the 2014 off season OR you can use both in the 2013 off season or both in the 2014 off season. As per NHL.com see below.

"The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association on Tuesday agreed on a change in compliance buyout rules, allowing teams to buy out player contracts prior to Saturday.

In the new Collective Bargaining Agreement agreed to recently by the NHL and the NHLPA, clubs were permitted two "compliance" buyouts to take place during the 2013 and/or 2014 offseasons in order to ease the transition to a lower salary cap.

The new agreement allows teams to use one of those compliance buyouts prior to the start of this season. However, the player's full salary for the 2012-13 season still would count against the team's cap.

Players that are bought out will become unrestricted free agents, eligible to sign with any team."

There are some fans out there that seem to think that every team will be buying players out left right and centre. I doubt it happens. Redden/Gomez are extreme situations, but I bet Canucks have zero compliance buy outs, the same goes for most teams. If I were Aquilini and Gillis came to me and said "we need to buy Luongo/Ballard out of their contracts in order to compete", I would tell him it's coming out of your salary!

Can you imagine Gillis going to see Aquillini .

Gillis :Can I have 26 Mill to buy out LU

Aquillini : Uhm have you tried waivers

Gillis : Oh yeah

Are the Canucks at all aware there is a salary Cap next year, and if they do, are they aware its not 400 million?

Serious question. It seems ignored to the point I wonder if its actually something nobody is aware of.

I await your 1967's and sexual oriented insults as well as apologies for your teams cap mismanagment.

Yes, I know, the two buy outs will solve all the problems, except for the part where I know they wont.

Back in time for the first game and the beat goes on here. Please point out exactly when Gillis has had cap problems. It's never been an issue with the Canucks, isn't now, and won't be next year. Simply because a team spends to the cap, does not translate to cap problems. Simplistic Leafs' trolling, I guess.

On a real hockey note: am I alone in thinking the Canucks won't do well this season (sic!)? The second line is laughable (until proven otherwise) and the 4th line is pretty much nothing. I like the third line. If it wasn't for their excellent goal-tending I would have picked them to miss the playoffs, but they shouldn't with the best duo in the league bailing them out like last season.

Where's my old buddy DCT? Has he really bailed or simply transformed?

Ballard can also be traded or bought out.

There is finally going to be pressure on AV to play young guys next year. Guys like Schroeder and Jensen will need to get a serious looks next year because of cap restraints. It should be interesting to see how AV handles it

The good news is the majority of "contending" teams will have to do the same cap juggling.

I don't believe you can send NHL contracts to the minors anymore via waivers, their contracts, less $900K, still would count towards the cap.

Bragging rights on the line, I notice you haven't adjusted your lineup for games later in the week yet, I wouldn't want you to use that as an excuse.

He's around somewhere. We've only gotta play well for a month without a second line, all good after that hopefully. Welcome back.

I think he meant that 29 teams wouldn't pass on Lu for free.

Based on Kesler not being placed on LTIR he should miss fewer than 10 games. If it looks like he will miss more I'm sure they would put him on retroactively and call up another forward.

Thanks. I hope they hang in until then. Haven't seen Kassian play recently. Has he improved or is he just around because of injuries? From what I have seen of him, he wasn't ready for the NHL.

I know but if you think Vancouver put Lu on waivers Columbus would pick him up and Canucks would not be on the hook for his salary.

He's played well in the AHL from what I've seen, struggles with consistency but he looks good. Hopefully AV sets him up to succeed!
