Because, like many intellegent people, he beileved this to be a risky process with no guarentees. With the way, he was able to add 4 top ten picks who were already not busts. JVR, Kessel, Phaneuf and Lupul is probably better than any average 4 top ten picks. Edmonton can not be looked as "average" what they did is unlikey to be repeatable.

The idea that there is only one way to build a team is preposterous.

if the leafs are going with a youth movement, and recent moves indicate that's what they're doing; then what's point in sending down a young and talented kid lilke frattin, who could actually contribute, and keeping a useless goon who hasn't won an nhl fight in 3 years and has zero hockey skill, like orr?

i could understand if orr could actually play, or was still a really feared enforcer, but i just don't understand the logic in this move. the guy is gonna a healthy scratch practically every night, and if his recent injuries are any indication, he's one punch away from being a vegetable.
