I think Nonis is doing the right thing so far by clearing out Lombardi and Connolly.
He'll let the fringe players play, evaluate over a short season and go from there next June.
Tank a short season, wait for Luonguo to get bought out instead of trading for him then sign him as an UFA for 4 years instead of 10, draft top 5 again, sign Getzlaf and Perry to 7 years $49 mil contracts nd its off to the races next year.
Perry Getzlaf JVR
Lupul Grabovski Kessel

To answer question 2 first. The Habs have a history of refusing those long term contracts. Typically what they do is have the player on an ELC and then when that expires they sign them to one of those shorter 2-3 year deals, typically 2. They did this with Higgins, Eller, Emelin, Pacioretty, Price, Diaz, Gorges, and many more.
If you look at all of those guys as well each of them had a bruidge contract in the $1.25-$2.75 million range, including Price and Pacioretty. In other words they don't sign players to UFA type money until their 3rd contract.
As for what Subban is asking nobody really knows. What is certain is that it is north of $5 million, most speculate around $6 million. What is also certain is that he is looking for a minimum 5 year contract. he wants contract term and length right away. - willey101
Thats just how it is in todays NHL, right or wrong. Its not Subban alone, so you cant take it personal. Just about all the young future stars are signing long term deals for big dollars these days. I do agree that big dollars and contracts should be earned, not handed out on potential, but im not a GM. |

If Benn is actually available 29 other teams will have crazy offers for him that the leafs wouldn't be able to compete with. - Scruffton
Not if we replaced Nonis with Alex Andreopoulos. He'd make a deal Dallas can't refuse. Say hello to my little friend |

As long as the BS is flying.
Gardiner and Lupul for Benn.
We know Carlyle is not fussy on Lupul (entering last year of contract)and they can slip JVR on the left side with Kessel and Benn. Gardiner is smooth, but soft (Reilly coming next year to replace Gardiner's role).
Would you do it? |

Depending on the quality of the high end talent. Also depending on quality of high end goalies.
Maybe you trade down, maybe you trade an asset to get another first rounder.
I have not looked at this years draft class close enough. - 50 Mission Cap

Leafs dont have the horses to land Benn. Unless your talking about trading Kessel straight up.
No way Nonis trades any 1sts - bobbyflex
I would trade Kessel for Benn any day and every day. |

But with Reily around (or close). Do you think Gardiner is expendable? - acresd
Ya I could see Nonis trading Gardiner if it's for another young player that fills a need.....

Yes but it also comes down to every team managing their books, and deciding contracts. Management has also repeatedly said that they will not dish out LTC's either. 6 years is the max they will ever go and so far they have stuck to that.
Habs have all the power in this one. Subban is our best D no doubt and team has a void without him but our team is 1-2 years away from 3 guys filling, albeit to a lesser level, his role and will already have Emelin, Gorges and possibly Diaz on the roster. He is a king in this city but the fans are turning on him quickly.
I really don't think he's gettign what he wants. He needs to take the Kulikov, Del Zotto type of deal with more money per season. I say 2 years at $3 or so then rake it in. |

Never heard of this guy... is he anything like Alex Anthopoulos? |
|
|

Who cares. The guy racks up points and goals. Trading your best forward for a better forward isnt the answer. The team should be adding to Kessel, not making lateral moves.
Only in Toronto does this crap happen..... - systemtool
I disagree. Benn would make our mediocre players better. Kessel is more of a last touch puck player. Benn makes the magic happen at a position we don't have anyone for. I would like to have both but I will take the #1 center first and foremost. |

GM Dave Nonuts will quickly learn that Dallas's asking price for Benn is just as steap if not more steap than the Canucks asking price for Lou.

Meh. I think Cup winners have a right to chirp Cupless teams who chirp everyone else.

you wouldn't ONLY give up benn.....i suspect it would cost something like
gardiner, 1st rd pick, plus other solid prospect (colborne, biggs, etc) - sensarmy_11
Not sure Colborne should be considered a solid prospect anymore. |

Indeed. Especially after Meehan has said don't expect him in the line-up anytime soon.
Personally PK is my favorite player but given the issues with the team I sort of hope he stays home, teams sucks and then we get a top 3 pick. Would love to see Drouin or MacKinnon here.
Oh and Philly has apparently offered Talbot and a 1st.......which was immediately decline. I hope Philly offers a contract because it either makes the negotiations easier and done or the deal is so ridiculous that Habs steal the picks and then use them as trade bait. |

I wouldn't give Gardiner in this deal. I'd replace him with Frattin & Biggs/Colborne/Ashton or whatever they like. I am day dreaming one day I get rto watch Gardiner and Reilly play together one day since the franking Oilers shot my dream of seeing Shultz & Gards together. So I am down with anything Dalls want but those 2 kids. Take Phaneuf and Lupul and Burke for Benn if you want. Don't touch Gards & Reilly. |
