huh?

If he clears look to Nonis to try and make a deal like the Lombardi one, where the Leafs pickup part of the tab. I think they are only allowed to do this twice.

Still on cap hit unless Nonis retains salary in a deal like Lombardi.
- LeafMan

Might as well. We dont need the cap space and if need be, we can buy out the contract.

Everyone is giving Nonis credit, but I don't think this is Nonis.

This is Carlyle. If you read Carlyle's comments, he said he was unimpressed with Connolly yesterday. Carlyle is shaping this team and telling his GM who he wants on it

- ILoveLamp

I think it's a bit of both, and the fact that its a new GM.

Simply because Nonis isn't attached to that signing, he can waive him without it looking bad to future UFAs. Burke would have to consider the ramifications of waiving a recent signing.

If he clears is he in the AHL or still on the payroll?
- AdamFrench

Yeah, as far as Connolly goes, putting him on waivers does absolutely nothing for the team other than make it clear he’s not going to be on the team, and instead, Kadri/Frattin/whoever will be instead.

If it were for the advanced compliance buyout, that saves no cap space. Gomez and Redden had years left, but their cap hit still counted in full this year. Connolly has nothing after this year, and so they can’t use one of those on him. As long as no one claims him (which is a safe assumption), he’s most likely going to the Marlies, and may end up getting called up in emergency. No recall waivers, so, he can be left there until they need him. If they need him. If someone claims him, he’s off the cap for this year too, which, IMO, doesn’t really do much for the Leafs either. I can’t see them needing $10M in cap space.

So, as I say, it means nothing more than one of the youngsters will get a spot.

this might be a strong indication that Nonis isn't going to go for Luongo - Connolly could have been a piece going back to Vancity (realistically - I don't mean in the eyes of the Vancouver fans who want Kessel/Kadri/Gardiner/Reilly +++ for Lu-contract). God hope Nonis avoids Luongo like the plague.

wouldn't want to waste a buyout on him.

One goes to Komi, the other goes to a dump from another team.

Makes me wonder....how much say do you think Carlyle has had in this?
- Pen15

I know this is Carlyle, but it's still the right start. Im so glad we got rid of Lombardi... So glad.

They could have done that whether he cleared waivers or not. That rule has nothing to do with waivers, as far as I know. Just the new advanced buyout thingy.

And it’s not that they can only do it twice, you can only have two players on payroll/cap hit at a time that you’re doing that with (although, someone mentioned it’s actually three). So, next year, when Connolly and Lombardi’s contracts are done, they can do it again with two more players.

I still think that's an overpayment.

How about Connolly + Coyotes 3rd/4th round pick?
