The problem with these debates are that all gun users are case in the same die. Responsible gun owners are beaten up by statistics of crimes committed by people that do not adhere to any set of laws. You see statistics all the time that outline number of firearm related deaths, and firearm deaths per capita, but they only tell a piece of the story. Guns are a problem in this country, and all the laws in the world won't correct that problem. People seemed shocked that a culture like America, that abuses everything from food, to sex, to drugs, to alcohol, to gambling, would also excessively abuse firearm ownership. As with most arguments the answer lies in the middle. The NRA has it wrong and the uber liberal that says burn all the guns is just as wrong. The problem is gun nuts refuse to question any facet of gun ownership, while gun detractors look to blame all the worlds problems on a tool.

I have to disagree.

The simple fact that there is NOT less violent crime in the U.S. and there IS MUCH MORE gun related violent crime creates a pretty obvious question...

What is the "benefit" of the right to bear arms?

The drawbacks are pretty damn clear.

The results from other countries that put gun laws in place also paints a pretty clear picture.

It was your choice to join the Marines. And you obviously interpret it as "defending your rights" but most people around the world see it as doing the dirty work of the American government. So stating your military history will garner no respect from me.

I served as well. I owned as many as 13 guns at one time when i was younger. I had children, and got rid of all but one. At the end of the day, i would never lift a gun again if i could strike a deal with the universe that my kids would be spared from being mowed down like cattle. Sadly, the world doesn't work like that. I feel like i have a better chance of protecting my family from the madness, by having a firearm on my person at all times, but even that is no guarantee. Stricter laws won't do the trick. We would need to hold gun burnings like the Nazi's did with books. Sadly, the ramifications from that happening would be catastrophic. As they say in the bible, you reap what you sew. We've built this powder keg, and we have to live in it. All the talk is just something to do, while we wait for the next explosion.

For me? Piece of mind. The hope that in a dire situation, i'll be able to save my family. That's it. I don't speak for anyone else. I hope i never have to draw a gun on a human ever again, but if im backed into a corner, i want to control my destiny.
