Really? Why?

Apparently, the existing over-35 waiver rules are mitigated by the new $900K threshold for any AHL-assignment waiver eligible player. Makes sense... just wasn't sure that was the case when it was announced previously that the over-35 rules were unchanged from the last CBA.

Didn't say, although it's likely the $900K threshold.
- Jsaquella

Oh okay. Sucks for Lilja but he was screwed for playing time anyway, especially with Gustafsson coming back (soon).

Thanks for the explanation Bill! This does make a lot of sense.

I agree. He's was looking like the 8th guy...now seems Foster is the 6th guy and Gervais is 7th

Lilja is (about to be) where the Flyers would want him to be right now, all things considered. Available to plug in on the short term when needed, but incurring nothing on the cap in the meantime.

Good point. Kelly's system must have a mobile QB. Can't count on Vick staying healthy at this point. Not to mention he's just not very good.

Yep. I thought they'd have to carry at least most of his hit, but if the new rules erase that, all the better

I think I might actually be more comfortable with that.. I wonder if the pairings are gonna look like this:

Timonen-Schenn
Coburn-Grossmann
Meszy-Foster

Any news on how Mez looks?
- flyer_nutter

To me he looked like he was struggling. Especially evident in one on one drills where he needed to skate backwards and keep the forward to the outside.

Yes, I'm pretty sure those will be the pairings.

Until Meszaros is back at close to 100 percent mobility, that third pairing really scares me defensively.

The entire depth of the defensive group scares the hell out of me to be honest.

I have a gut feeling that tells me they will look to address that during the season.. I just hope they dont go crazy.

I thought we were talking about when they won the cups.

They got to the final yes. Lost as well. The Flyers made the finals against Chicago. Coaches have different systems because they believe some are better than others.

In general I despise a reactionary system. With the current setup of the team I would be even more hesistant to employ such a system. You play to your strengths. I believe Lava will tweak things but there is so much a coach can do when a guy gets beat on coverage because he is slow or in general not a good defensive player.

- flyer_nutter

What exactly is a reactionary system? It's almost impossible to not have some reactionary play, regardless of your philosophy. Think about how many times we've seen the Flyers aggressively forecheck, when they really had no chance to get on the puck? One quick pass in either a side or center breakout, and two forwards are beaten. And the Flyers a lot of time have F3 in an equally aggressive position, so he is beat also. The it's open ice through the neutral zone, and an odd man rush, that results in a quality chance against, or extended attack time in the Flyers end.
Why not incorporate both strategies in your forechecking schemes. Stay in an aggressive 1-2-2 or 3-2 attacking forecheck when it's available. But also read and react if it's not there and keep F2 and F3 in a better position higher up in the offensive zone, in a 1-2-2 to defend the breakout, and create turnovers up high or in the neutral zone.
Not to mention game situations, such as when you have a 2 goal lead. What sense does it make to play an aggressive forecheck then. Forecheck in a 1-2-2 and check the other team. So many times the Flyers lack any kind of neutral zone checking and allow easy entry into the Flyers zone. And them the D men get blamed for the turnovers that result from the lack of support.
The best teams can adapt to the situation, and play a number of styles. Including aggressively forechecking. You call it reactionary. I call it smart Hockey.

Probably way Leight to the party, but so what?

The captain is expected to arrive on time, in a cheerful mood and, preferably, be appropriately dressed for the occasion.

That is sort of scaring. Mesz hurt is still faster than most of the dmen though.

I hope that they are not rushing Mesz back too soon after what was a very serious injury.

You trying to say Richards wasn't always on time, was surly, and that a Yankess hat and T-Shirt isn't appropriate attire?

Also a big key in being a Captain is what kind of hat you wear.

Looks like 2nd line if Briere is out to start the season (which seems likely). With Talbot & Voracek as linemates I believe.
