I would venture to guess that he WILL play. The way they are running him through regular reps and, on a daily basis, second power play unit point work leads me to think he will start come Saturday.

So who has the inside track to start as the 6th defenseman saturday?

It always seems the system we play ends up with our players running out of gas in the playoffs or always hurt.....funny the NYR system is to have their defence block every shot ...... and they seem tough to beat. The Tampa Fiasco last year with them waiting for us and sitting back ..... the rope a dope theory.....let the opp.
tire themselves out and take advantage. I think in any good coach you fit the system to your players skill set....I don't know what changes that would mean for the flyers but My observation still stands....we look tired and are always hurt....

Here's the thing about Laviolette's system and style of play. There is no doubt in my mind that it is a quality system that you can win with. That's true with just about any system. If the players execute it. But Laviolette's style of play requires a ton of skating and energy. When the legs aren't there, it's not going to work. I've always preferred a defense first system with a counter attacking offense off of turnovers. But as we saw in game 6 againts the Pens last year. When they are playing Laviolette's style of play well, it can suffocate teams.

I like Regher, but they need a guy who can move the puck, not another bigger, defense first guy with average or worse mobility

I like Adam and the third

The one thing that I love about Laviolette is that he seems to put his pride after his drive to win. A lot of coaches might be extremely upset by the owner & GM both saying the system must change (the same system Lavy used to win a Cup in Carolina & take the Flyers within 2 games of winning another) as well as additionally slighted by the appointment of John Paddock in his new position. Seems to me that Lavy just wants whatever will put the team in the best position to win. He realizes that he doesn't know everything & he's willing to change. The exact opposite of this was Andy Reid' downfall.
- NickTheKid87

I hope you're right. But I haven't seen much evidence of Laviolette being willing to change his philosophy.

And I think he needs to do some tweaking because the personnel he has on the back end aren't really ideally suited to play the system as it needs to be played.

I don't see Briere going anywhere this year, as he's been the most dominant playoff scorer since the 04/05 lockout (how sad we have to reference which one now). If his postseason production dips or, God forbid, the Flyers don't make the playoffs, I think he could be traded in the offseason.
I hope not though, as he seems to be a great fit with this team. I remember in Game 6 vs. Buffalo where he got up in the locker room after the second period and told the team he wasn't ready for the season to end after Kaleta was asking him about his divorce, and they came back to win the game and series.

I think where the real divide is, is in the Flyers front office. If everyone remember's, when the Flyers removed Stevens, Holmgren wanted a Coach and a style of play that "hunts the puck"! Well he got that in Laviolette. Now just a few Season later, they want to put the reins on that a little, and play more conservatively. Seems as though they can't make up their mind. They need to identify a course, and stick to it. And build the team along that style of play. The inconsistency is coming from upstairs.
- MJL

The worst thing they can do is put the expectation out there that Lavi should go out of his comfort level and coach more like Torts/Sutter. The Caps asked for a similar tactical shift with Boudreau last season, and that was an unmitigated disaster.

If you've got a coach you brought in to coach an attacking style of play, and you've had a track record of success based on how that style fits your personnel, you'd really be foolish to throw that out the window over a regular season sweep at the hands of a division rival and to try to shelter your enigmatic goaltender.

What part of No trade/movement clause don't you understand. Briere is going nowhere unless he WANTS to be traded.

He doesn't need to change his philosophy so much as he needs to tweak or evolve it. The system works but are the personnel right for the way he usually runs it? I don't think so therefore I'd like to see it fit for the players he has.

Just like how McNabb worked so well in the West Coast offense, having a guy who can only throw rockets for 4-yard gains.

I don't think you can do one without the other. As Tomahawk said above, asking a Coach to change his philosophy, usually doesn't work out well.

I think Lavy is smart enough to realize he has to tweak to fit his personnel. Square peg in to a round hole and all that.
