I see more of a position for Giroux to succeed by being named Captain now, then Richards when he was named. Sure Giroux is our best player but it's more then that. He's a former Flyers first round pick and home grown. Giroux saw the immaturity of Carter and Richards. He may have even been a part of it. These reasons alone should make him a better Captain And the only choice

Agreed and to me it's not a real discussion. It's his team now, especially after the Pitt series.

On another note, I read some of Snider's comments about Bryz, and he made some interesting points. The comment about Phoenix's D being more tight than ours. Snider is suggesting that we'll be more defensive etc, which I am really not convinced of with what our D corps looks like. What is always neglected is that it's the forward's job to become more competent 2 ways as well. There's room for improvment there for sure.

I know the big issue is that he wasn't performing at a level that was commensurate with his salary, but I really wonder what he'd be worth? 1 mil and play as a 5/6 dman? Good question.

If Redden would come in on a tryout next season, I am all for it. Sheldon Souray was garbage at the AHL level and still made a big comeback

Probably Leight but

Puck Podcast
Scott Gomez and Wade Redden will soon be free agents as the NHL and NHLPA have agreed to something called "an accelerated compliance buyout" which will allow teams to buyout any player they want before opening night and still have two more buyout options to use between now and opening night in 2014. Redden and Gomez' salaries will count against the Rangers and Canadiens caps, respectively, this season but will not count against their caps next season. Both players will be able to sign with any team that will have them and play this season.

If walker was not on LTIR----he would be gone.....Shelly might be gone as long as we don't loose the 2 buyouts over the next 2 years

No chance they waste an amnesty on Shelley, not with his contract up in a few months.

What will Foster and Bryz be this season? Then we add Redden?? Too many question marks already, why add another? If Redden can remotely be what he was, I want him to replace Timonen.

Per Bob McKenzie, any team can user their amnesty buyouts now if they wish, but it has to be before Saturday. Any player bought out this way will still count against the cap this season.

If I read that correctly...you still get 2 buyout.....getting rid of a contract like shelly or walker ....... we keep the cap hit but pickup a roster spot....

These are the same amnesty buyouts we've heard about, they can be used now or in the next two offseasons. It seems a waste to use these buyouts on Shelley or Walker (if we could), as they'll be off the books after this season. Unless they really, really need that contract count down right this second.

I understand both Walker and Shelly's contracts are over after this season.....that said, I read and understand that you can buyout players now and 2 more....after the season but that might be too good to be true

Is Sestito even in camp? All I've been seeing shows Laughton as 4th line center. I think he gets his 5 game tryout.
- jmatchett

Yes, Sestito has been skating all three days this week. He was in gray jersey ("5th line") on Sunday and today, skated with potential 4th liners yesterday.

I don't believe it's two more after this season, it's two total per team.

Teams get two amnesty buyouts. The original rule was that they could use them during the normal buyout phase in summer of 2013 or 2014. The change allows teams to activate one of the amnesty buyouts now. If The Rangers amnesty buy out Redden tomorrow, they have one amnesty buyout left to use this summer or next.

The cap amnesty wouldn't kick in until next season-so Redden still sits on the Rangers cap until summertime. All this does is allow guys like Redden & Gomez a chance to play this year, rather than sit home and watch Days Of Our Lives

EDIT: New wrinkle for the accelerated compliance buyout(NHL doesn't call it Amnesty) is that if teams buy guys out by Saturday, the player must agree to the buy out and the cap hit must be over $3mm...per Nick Kypreos

I understand it the same way, but he's correct that the excerpt MB posted seems to say it won't count against the two buyouts. As I type this, this tweet happens:

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun
And to be clear: if you use a compliance buyout this week, you only have one left to use next summer. This isn't an extra one.

That is not the way I read it. The way I understand it is that they can use one now that counts against the cap this season and still have the new next summer.

Yeah, the first few tweets we a little confusing. This wasn;t to allow teams to buy out more guys, it was to allow guys who were told to stay home & sit out for the year a chance to play this year.

The teams get an early start on paying off the buy out and get no cap advantage this year and players get to try and find a job for this year to parley into a bigger deal in summer. It's fair enough. Just wish it was part of original deal

in the same light, i like the 2 way ability of Rusty-Read-Simmonds, tho Read's speed was impressive alongside Wellwood on the 2nd line PK late in the season. he is responsible in his own end, and despite his lack of size, could work with a grind-it-out line.
- eshake

I think Read has the versatility to play on any line.

If you can save 1/3 of real money by placing a Gomez or redden on the bench of each of their contracts why buyout now...what , save money , put player on the bench and give him the Shelly treatment

Redden is at 5m salary x 2= 10m....1/3 of that even for the NYR is some coin
Gomez has 10 m left as well...1/3 is alot
