The point I think you're missing or failing to address is that the Leafs dont have enough to subtract in order to add GOOD pieces. Thats why they need to stick with what they have until they do. Why suck with some mediocre vets (ala the Leafs of the past 10 years) when you can suck with young guys who can pan out to be good?

That way once you gather some good prospects, some of them will develop and some of them can be traded for QUALITY vets who help push them to contend.

I maintain that there is no trade out there right now for the Leafs that will make them contend in the next two years. (realistic trade that is)

I am in no way applauding the Kessel trade. It is what it is, live with it. We do have good enough players to make some decent trades. I'm all for the playing the young guys and not trading them.. All i'm saying is bring in a quality goaltender and sign a couple UFA's including a top line center and play hockey! If we are last in the standings halfway thru the sched then sure, tank and lets get MacKinnon.

Rumours... This is an obvious attempt to get Gillis to reconsider the Leafs offer. If we sign Bernier we are screwed.

And yet the Yankees have only won the world series 5 times in that time (vs 12 for Man Utd). Utd were smart as they invested TONNES in youth development, and that got them Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Gary Neville, Ole Solskjaer; guys who were able to make major contributions.

His best day may or may not be done,, but he is still an elite goaltender and will be for some time. Signing Lu would have the same effect on the team as signing Belfour did.
