thanks to Nonis: Sedins, Kesler and Edler are still Canucks. I remember when Canucks fans were calling for their heads the first couple of years of their pro careers. Looks like patience paid off
- bobbyflex

Yeah, for sure, Schneider as well since he was rumored to be traded during the time Nonis was here. But Nonis did offer Schneider straight up for Gilbert Brule as well.

I'm not a huge Nonis fan, but he's a good GM for a rebuilding team and not so much for a team that needs to be aggressive and win now.

I dont mind him at all. I cant stand Glen Healy
- systemtool

Ya I'm starting to think I'm the only one, I just find he harps on certain players too much. While watching a marlies broadcast the whole team was coughing the puck up and not looking good and Kadri made a bad play and he just went on and on about it.

Also he always pulls out his "remember that save later" line. The guy just seems like a pompass dumbass

Healy is a moron too, I think we should consider ourselves lucky that we only get him once a week for CBC games, Milen does leafs tv and sportsnet

Now Edler is better than Weber!

edit: all the good on that team is from Burke and Nonis.

Amazing how Gillis hasn't been able to do anything with the core they put there... and how few fans actually recognize their contribution.

- Feeling Glucky?

Outside of the homer fans, people are starting to realie that Gillis hasn't done a whole lot player-wise outside of guys like Hamhuis, Higgins, Lappy and Booth, and now Garrison. His signings have been solid for the most part(outside of Sturm who was traded), he always seems to get good value there as a former agent. But his trades have been pretty bad overall: Grabner/1st for Ballard, the Booth trade could end up hurting us if he doesn't develop chemistry with Keser, the Hodgson-Kassian swap is still very much up in the air and how he handles the Lu trade. The good trades were his trade deadline additions in Lapierre and Higgins.

His drafting is also a question mark, but IMO the Canucks scouting needs a serious overhaul with their long-time scouts. One of Nonis' first round picks was Patrik White who wasn't even good enough for the AHL. Burke also had some ugly picks outside of the Sedins and Kesler, and his hard-ass style cost us a prospect named R.J. Umberger. The Alex Edler pick was all Thomas Gradin(Swedish scout).

All picks are from the scouts either individually or a consensus among them, the GM has final say but they usually just go by what the scouts recommend.

Honestly I kind of hope that Nonis just stays the course this year. If we're terrible come deadline move some guys for picks/prospects. I think Lupul could fetch a lot at the trade deadline assuming he picks up where he left off.

If (magically) we're a playoff team come deadline then maybe you can make a move to solidify us, more in a bottom 6 playoff veteran type move that won't cost a lot, or at a bare minimum re-sign Lupul so he doesn't walk in the summer.

Then next offseason he has a draft where he could get a top pick, has a lot of money coming off the books, has a lot of free agent options, plus there will be those amnesty buyouts that could lead to interesting possibilities.

Really I think he should take this (short) season to really get a good understanding of what he has and what he needs, something that Burke never really seemed to do, and properly assess what his needs are. Go after those needs in the offseason and go from there. He doesn't NEED to make a big splash less than a week before the season starts (and less than a week on the job), this season people will basically give him a mulligan since he didn't really have time to do anything that Burke hadn't already put in motion.

I guess it depends on the GM, I think some GM's rely on their scouts much more heavily than others do.

Head on over to the Rangers thread if you're looking to discuss something more interesting, they're calling for Phaneuf's head!

Hey, depth is depth. He's still young and could find his way in the AHL.

Wouldn't be Leafs training camp without awkward scrums with Phil Kessel and Tim Connolly.

If I'm not mistaken there was only two or three from the 4th round to 7th round in that draft the was half decent and played in the NHL, I know Gunnarsson is one, Frattin and another one from the Oilers. Pretty bad draft.

I believe Simmonds and Subban went in the 2nd round as well, so basically about 5 NHL'ers from round two to seven.

I thought he was round one, so add him only about 6 or 7 quality players that I can think of, round 2 to 7.

That is where McIntyre has to step in and break Connolly's nose. Don't Frank with Phil.. he is all we have for Christ sake.
