Ok first of all, this trade will not happen, Gilles is not desperate to move Luongo right now. With the condensed season, a backup with the ability of Luongo or Schneider is the best thing you can have for this season, which is why J.Bernier won't move until the off-season.

Problem is though Gilles SHOULD be desperate to move him. Gotta think long-term here, let's say you keep Luongo until the trade deadline to prevent Schneider from over doing it and the very few teams that want and can take Luongo don't need him anymore. Using the Leafs as an example what if Reimer shines and they don't need him anymore? I know there is the amnesty buyout but pissing away 30M to drop one player is a poor business decision that could see Gilles without a job.

Personally if I'm Gilles, I would take what I can get from Toronto and give up on playing the waiting game hoping they are desperate. With Burke already gone, there is very little pressure for the Leafs to overpay and get that no.1 goalie.

Ask for Bozak, Macarthur, and Scrivins for Luongo and when the Leafs say no chance, settle on Connolly, Lombardi, and Scrivins. You lose value BADLY with this deal but this year you get depth at forward and a low chance Connolly bounces back with his extra rest and a very solid young potential starter for the future that can play backup until Lack returns and battles him for that backup position.

Next season, the Canucks get 5M in cap removed (which is huge since the cap is dropping 6M) allowing them to sign a big player without having to gut the team (think how awesome Perry would be with the Sedins) and who knows the Canucks may end up with 3 NHL level goalies in a few seasons giving them more trade bait to fill in other holes.

I know my little scenerio will never happen and is a huge joke of a trade but if Gilles cannot get the Gardiner/Rielly/Kadri level prospect(s) he wants then he should cut his loses, get 1 solid prospect and free up that cap space while he still has a trade partner.

Im glad you're an expert on the Canucks internal situation but don't even know how to spell Gillis.

Besides that, your contradicting yourself... You say having two capable goalies is an asset in this shortened season (I agree) but then go on to say the Canucks should trade Luongo for basically nothing (salary back) because of the CHANCE of him somehow losing even that value (becoming untradeable) by the trade deadline.

So in your world, the leafs are the only team with a goalie problem and every team is gonna have a healthy and capable goalie close to playoff time so the canucks mayyyyyy as well dump Luongo for nothing...

I have no interest in Luongo.

If I am Gillis right now, there is no way I do this deal. The reasons are pretty basic.

1) Gillis\' best deal will come when a team is desparate. This will probably happen in 4-6 weeks. It might even be the Leafs.

2) Vancouver\'s window is closing. It is not the worst thing in the world to have Luongo around in case Schneider gets injured or off to a slow start.

Finally,

Why would Gillis take pieces back that he could easily get on any given summer in the FA market? He would be better to keep Luongo as insurance for the whole year and buy him out, and get some FA\\\'s, than take this deal.

Gillis should wait... at some point, some team may well offer him something that is actually valuable and not easily obtained.
