It will be interesting to see, the kids should be out of the gates running and the old guys should have a little more longevity and stamina. Giggity.

disagree, eager has wona cup, but even toews was a better leader than him b4 he won his own cup...

they are missing a few x factors... I would say they need to add a vet or 2 with the "it" factor. Hard to explain on a keyboard. The team looks lost. Hall i could see having the potential, but even then im not sure. While he lost (frank)ing pissed after the loss, it takes someone to be pissed b4 the loss.

It makes me think back to 07 or 08. the habs were down 5 nothing to the rangers after 1. the habs won 6-5. it was voted the best comeback in the last decade, and it was because of pure leadership. a koivu coupled with kovalev might not be a bad thing in edm.

I just don't understand the knock on Yakupov. The kid is Muslim. He does not drink. Are you serious about wanting Khabibulen to show him the ropes. Have you really thought this through. I think he is just an ebullient kid with a ton of personality. Give the kid a little space. I think once the fans get a chance to understand that he is just an excited kid, they are going to warm up to him real strong.

He has repeatedly signaled that he is not the traditional Russian. Give him a chance. I get the feeling that some in Edmonton are looking for reasons not to like him.

Lol, you have no idea what you're talking about, I've never met any oiler fan who isn't pumped about having him on our team

And having Kahbi around absolutely will be good for Nail, someone he can relate too and speak his first language to....

Clout (to paraphrase): Tambellini has been brilliant by purposely tanking each and every of his three years, continuing the good work of Lowe, so their roster now looks better than the Leafs or Flames on paper'.

Well, I have said before and will say it again, the Oil ripped off their fanbase for over half a decade. For maybe a window of 2-3 yrs. If they dodge injuries, DD plays like a franchise goalie (questionable), ect.

I am quite pleased with Calgary's roster, and they will prove to surprise some. They also tried to make the playoffs each yr, even if they fell short the last 3, and were more interesting to follow due to this.

However, enjoy your all star front 6. Time will tell how the rest works out, and if the D and G can hold up. Hall would be the biggest question (injury-wise), but I think he will work out well.

I just don't see all the chest puffing to be anything but hypocritical. Good fans don't cheer for their team to tank, and then, think they are world-beaters.

Richard I usually really like your blog but this one was horrible. Not only did you say some stupid poop but you contradict yourself like a woman on her rag the way your opinion flip flops day to day. My take:
-If Ottawa is shopping a goalie I say we get all over that situation. Robin Lehner has played well in the AHL, but word is Bishop will be their backup. Lehner is a really good prospect and could immediately overtake Danis as backup and possibly Dubby as our future starter. If not, he could at least bridge the gap between Dubby and hopefully one of Bunz or Roy or another roster move as our goalie of the future.
-You and everyone else have said countless times how badly we need to rid ourselves of Khabby from the organization. What has changed this fact?
-Why would we want a raging drunk to have anything to do with our #1 overall pick? We want influences like that as far away from our young talent as possible.
-How has Evander Kane put a target on his back? He's a young guy with a lot of cash. So he had a couple of pictures taken with fat stacks of cash. Big deal. Doesn't mean the vets of the league are gonna be going out of their way to run a guy cause he's young and immature. He's like 99% of young males. I would give my left nut to get him on this team.
-No matter what we can sign Khabby back for, we don't want or need him. As you said there are tonnes of other goalies that could be signed for the money you're talking about.
-How is our defense that bad defensively? We have Smid and N. Shultz who are both very good defensive specialists that don't put up many points. We put either of them on the ice and their partners inadequacies get somewhat hidden.
-We can't be concerned with ataining more draft picks and planning for the future anyomore. The time to win is now. And if not now then next year. Picks take time to develope and this fanbase wants to and deserves to win now!
-If we do suck balls... Which is very likely... I want Seth Jones. He's gonna be a stud in this league. Big size and big skills.

I would argue they are 2 good drafts away from re-stocking .
In the meantime, Karri Ramo is a 'prospect' acquired on the cheap, killing it in the KHL and appears to be Kipper's successor in a year or two. So, can trade Irving for another pick or prospect needed.
Also, going the unconventional route (Cervenka) and signing a 25-goal scorer (Hudler) allows the kids to come up one at a time (Baert, Backlund, Horak, Brodie) while playing in a competitive environment for several years. Unlike the Oilers.
Flames are re-tooling, but people don't seem to understand this much. The future is much better than ppl think.

Funny- doesn't seem like much of a reach to me.

http://boston.sbnation.co...ton-bruins-mark-jankowski

http://www.hockeywilderne...-prospects-mark-jankowski

"With the lack of high potential forwards in this year's draft, some team picking near the end of the first might like to take the gamble. Jankowski has great upside with great tools that would make magic on an NHL team, the question is whether he can adapt to tougher competition appropriately. Seeing as he is just coming out of Canadian prep, he will need tons of time to slowly develop."

And since the soonest he would suit up for Calgary is 2015-16, seems like a better draft than picking another Tzachuk.

The draft last year was not strong. I was/am fine with it. We need a future #1 C anyways.

The older guys who mostly leadership skills to offer usually want to get themselves on a cup competitive roster. Weight and Recchi in 06, Adams and Guerin in 09, Recchi in 11, all came to their rosters a short time before the team won the cup, and after they had proved to be a contender.

If the Oilers do that, we can add that sort of leadership down the road.

- Morris

I agree, but I think it's too soon to make that move. Ideally I'd look for that trade when I knew my team was a playoff team and I wanted to push them up to a Cup contender.

Flames have 3 players over 31...say what you want but the team is getting younger...obviously the team that has been the worst of 30 teams since the last lockout record wise will have better young talent due to the welfare system of a draft the NHL had. Funny the Oilers sucked so bad they had to change the rules
