I know we have hit on this before but I believe Jack Johnson is overpaid. What are some thoughts on his salary as compared to what Edler should get in his contract. I really would have a hard time paying ED much more than JJ's contract thought I believe Ed's skill level and the type of game he plays is better. I want to believe we can keep him but I know there is some team out there that is gonna throw stupid money at him. That being said I think Gillis will be offering him a fair homie discount... Will it be enough?

Gillis looks like he's suffering high blood pressure as well..

There's alot of pressure on Gillis right now. The Luongo trade, how much money will the owner have to eat because of that contract, the decision to keep AV, the Hodgson trade and the current hole in the middle, rookie starting GT, another year without a drafted player in the line up possibly? Gillis' years are adding up... he has to show last year was just one step back in a difficult season. Otherwise it is a case of 1 step foward and two back... Aquilini doesnt (frank) around...

I am not sure they buy out Ballard .The buyout is available at the end of the season and he has two years left at 4.2 .To buy him out it would be 5.6 for an empty locker. He has a history of concusion issues (wink wink) .LTIR will pay his salary and the cap space can be replaced. They can bring him back in playoffs if needed like last year. Ballard would be paid 4.2 to sit on his ass. Sweet deal

Lu will be traded so maybe no buys required.

6 years @ 4.75 mil a season, it'll make him the highest paid Canuck defenseman, but not out of line with Hamhuis/Bieksa/Garrison and keep him for his prime years. Any more than that get whatever you can for him now because he's not worth 5 mil+ a season.

I would take Bozak Gunner and the 1ST

I imagine it is conditional of the playoffs.

I'd love it but I think its a pipedream. If luongo could not have those breakdowns in the pplayofs. This would be very reasonable.

4.75 is under market value for a D of his calibre. I hope he tells Gillis to (frank) off if that's all he offers.

If he's asking for more than that, it's time to trade him for useable assets, with the cap going down next year and plenty of teams going to have cap problems, he has to realize the big deals just aren't going to be out there this off-season. 4.75 a season makes him the highest paid Canuck defenseman which should stroke his ego, but makes him affordable and makes Ballard expendable.

If for no reason other than this, Bettman should be sh!t-canned.

His agent isn't going to care about the lowered cap. They'll just point out the many D in the league who are worse than Edler and are making well over 5.

I'm guessing he's in a different uni by next season and part of me hopes it bites the Canucks in the ass.

Gillis is on record saying he has full support of ownership to a) spend to the cap, and b) to pay the players the most he can as long as it fits within the internal salary structure. I believe he will offer Edler something that carries an actual annual salary in the 4.5m range, but with bonuses in the first year or two that bring the cap hit up to 5++m per year. Something like 22.5 m over five years plus 1.5m bonus in each of the first two years, maybe a little more. This way Edler is making the same money as the other top 4 guys in salary and he is getting the inflation bump.

Bieksa, and Hamhuis signed their contracts 2 and 3 years ago, and neither were performing at Edler's level at the same age. Garrison just got 4.5 and has one good season under his belt. Edler deserves more.

If he wouldn't sign a deal like this...This issue should be top priority for G. I know Lu is the hot topic but as soon as that is over get him signed.

That's what my proposal does. It recognizes that the market for defensemen has changed since Hamhuis signed, by compensating Edler through bonus, but keeps the annual salary in line with the rest of the d core. Maybe the numbers are a little different (years and/or dollars) but I could see this being the way Gillis gets it done. I don't think Bieksa or Garrison should be earning nearly what they are, but I guess they could have earned more elsewhere... We'll see if Eddy is the same.

Trotz's system (where Hamhuis was playing at Edler's age) would make anybody look like a Norris candidate.

And playing with the Sedins inflates anyone's stats, what's your point? Sorry, I just don't see Edler as that Norris calibre defenseman, he's not a pure PMD like Karlsson and he's not that heavy hitter/shot type D like Weber/Chara. He's also got a history of back problems and he still hasn't shown the type of consistency needed to be a #1 D and get paid like one. Sorry, more than maybe 4.9 mil a season (which is more than he's worth by far even allowing for inflation of D-men contracts) and we're better looking for cheaper options. I'll grant you that in certain respects, he is/can be better than Hamhuis, Bieksa and Garrison, but those traits can be reproduced in players on cheaper contracts.
