it was rivet for gorges + 1st. that was a good trade at the time, but drafting maxpac made it a steal.

good job we all know you can repost. the kings arent a prototypical 8th seed team, they were good enough to finish in first, they just didnt get their poop together until the end of the season.

OK, well isn't Burke always quoted as saying he doesn't want to sneak into the playoffs, be an 8 seed and get spanked? That's not how he envisions building a team...that's besides the point...the fact is he brought in guys which didn't live up to expectations and Kessel is part of that group...this led to Seguin...he may not have thought it would have led to Seguin, but it did...

The idea that Kessel has underachieved is just plain not true, the leafs problems don't have anything to do with him, look at the goalie stats for the last 5 years. BB has never understood goalies well.

Kessel is only now turning 25 and he has 165 NHL Goals and almost 400 points? Will Seguin be there at 25? We will see. Kessel was a quick fix, but ALSO a long term one.

Yes I absolutely believe Seguin will be there at 25. I liked Kessel when he was in Boston, but I would take Seguin, Hamilton, and Knight everyday of the week over Kessel. Not only will Seguin surpass Kessel in offensive production, his overall game will be much better. Seguin is learning how to play two-way hockey from Bergeron and Julien's system. I would even venture to say that Seguin will finish with more goals/points than Kessel this season.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say he has underachieved...he for sure is a great sharp shooter and I think he is a good player, but, truth be told the trade stinks...Leafs would be in a much better position if the trade didn't go through and we actually started a rebuild...would you not agree?

I guarantee it was the other way around. Philly would have to be incredibly stupid to turn down Weber for Cutourier when they have B. Schenn as well. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Couturier > Schenn IMO, and they clearly thought that with the offer they made they could get Weber without giving up neither schenn nor couts.. You need to take a lap, and maybe sit the next few plays out

I agree Couts is better, I never said he wasn't, I'm just saying when you have B Schenn, who's pretty close to a bona fide top 6 center and have a weakness on defense, you usually trade your surplus for your weakness. What would you rather have

Yes and no. hindsite is 20-20. No one in the media or anywhere though they'de be that low so it wasn't burke undervaluing as much as they guys just sucked, and i think playing under wilson was a problem. Burke's huge mistake was loyalty to his buddy more than anything. Having said that, sequin and kesel for me are a wash, Kessel will never be the type of player sequin is and sequin isn't as pure a sniper. They will probably be similar stats wise when all is sadi and done but with different styles. The kicker is hamilton but we don't know yet what he is. He should be good, and playing in Boston with guys like chara will help him consideralbly so if he works out then boston won the trade. But Burke never imagined a top 5 pick nor did anyone else. I blame him for the goaltending and wilson, not the kessel trade.

Phil Kessel was 6th in scoring last year playing on a team win almost no other proven offensive options. teams keyed on Kessel and yet he still out scored Tavares, the Sedins, Hossa....all of whom you would probably take over Seguin and Hamilton...right? Oh, and Kessel just turned 25.

Ek, don't try and argue the Kessel deal rationally with anyone who's a Toronto fan. They either hate the deal - or can tolerate it. There's nothing else.

Its akin to the Canucks thinking they are getting a bundle for Luongo because there is so much demand for him. Its emotional, its unbalanced and it is devoid of facts. It would be similar to the Rangers thinking they are getting a 1st rounder for Wade Redden and his contract. Now Wade maybe a fine defenseman... just like Luongo is a fine goalie, but at the end of the day its the crazy contract that dictates the players trade value. Nothing more.

I disagree with that...but lets say you are right, would you rather have kessel than the potential of the other side of the trade? If you could have a mulligan would you go back and do the trade again if you were in that situation?
