but wouldnt you prefer to take that 6 million that wang is "allowing" for this "redden deal", break it up and spread it amongst a few players who at least have upside as opposed to an aging vet who wont be that useful once the isles are ready to compete?
- LetsGoIsles

YES.. but considering our past experiences with free agents... 3 free agents arent signing here & if they do the chances we can get 3 somewhat good d-men is a pipe dream... With that all said... OF COURSE I would want the money spent wisely (I.E. multiple lower priced players) but Redden is a higher talent & a very very good option should the multiple signing plan fall through.

YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE ISLANDERS.........the same team that got rid of the radio broadcast to save money. Do you really think they're gonna take on a washed up Wade Redden making him the highest paid player on the team?? Stop arguing just to argue......IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE
- kindlyrick

Of course they will.. they HAVE to add salary. They added a 5 million dollar 4th line player last year.. stop acting like this is all news to you or some far fetched scenario... Jeeze.

agreed, needless to say...but in the specific case of the islanders, who are a team centered around rebuilding and youth, getting that extra year of training and growing (physically and hockey sense) is a lot more essential than a team like the rangers who are made up of players where you know what you got.

henrik, callahan, richards, stall, nash, gaborik, girardi are all good players and you have a pretty good idea what youre going to get from them...for the most part they arent going to get exponentially better than what they are now.

pretty much for the rangers, what you see is what you get....which should be pretty damn good.

for the islanders, there is that sense of the unknown, bc they are a younger and not totally developed team.

make sense?

- LetsGoIsles

Yes, I do understand and the Islanders do have a young group of promising draft choices. I wasn't talking necessarily about the Rangers and their and their "core" group.

I was talking about other "young" players like the Oiler's young guys (scary) and other young players on teams around the league.

But since you mentioned the Rangers I will throw out their last 4 number one picks: Miller, Kreider, McIlrath and Skjei (the freshman defenseman starting for the #1 ranked college hockey team, Minnesota) who are getting bigger (6'2" and 200, 6'3 and 230 and 6'5 and 215 and 6' 2" and 197 respectively), stronger and better.

If you're referring to Rolston and his 5 millions, they brought in Visnovsky and his 5.6 million dollar cap hit. Capgeek has the isles listed at 50 million. Stop acting like bringing in Wade Redden is even an option.

HOW IS WADE REDDEN A HIGH TALENTED PLAYER??? He hasnt played a game in the NHL in 3 years.

Dont you think some other team would have given him a shot when he was on waivers??? The Habs took Gomez and his almost 9 million dollars a year cause they "thought" he had something left in the tank. Dont you think a team would have taken Redden and his 6.5 million if ANYONE THOUGHT HE HAD SOMETHING LEFT?

Instead your answer to the isles problems, is add a guy who is way overpriced and unproven at the NHL level in 3 years.........totally makes no sense. The Wade Redden from 10 years ago, is not the Wade Redden of today...

Do you read anything that I write or just see my name & argue?

I already said.. multiple times... Redden isnt my first choice... He's not even my second choice.. But he is a choice & one I wouldn't be upset with if its the way the team decided to go.

You reply to my posts............not the other way around. Redden isnt even a choice. To put it in perspective......why not just bring back Bryan Berard. He was the first overall that year (Redden was picked second). Its the same thing. Neither have any place on this team. Pick any team in the NHL and i can find a better option to trade for.

So the answer to the question would be NO i see.

What does who & where anyone was drafted have to do with anything? How is that perspective in anyone elses world but yours?

Wonderful.. you can dream up trades... awesome!!! Call the news stations!!

Again.. lets see if it sticks this time... If the team can trade for a young talented top 4 that would be my first hope, If the team can sign a better player as a free agent that would be swell.. but when those options are visited & unrealized Redden would be a fine option.

When the Rangers originally drafted McIlrath i thought it was a bad pick for a first round. But, after seeing Sather fleece the HABs of Ryan McDonaugh, for Gomez......adding a "beukaboom" type dman is perfect for that team.

The Gomez trade could go down as the best trade in the last 20 years by an NHL club.

Bryan Berard...........Wade Redden...........same guy to me. Neither should even been considered an option. Better off having Kenny Morrow get back out there...

I'd rather they sign Cam Barker to a 1-2 year deal. He's marginally better, still has gas left in his tank and a lot more motivation to succeed than Redden does. I've seen Redden a lot in Hartford, he's probably not exactly killing himself out there, but he's not even their best defenseman on most nights.
- shinkdew

but if we sign Barker we get no compensation pick along with it. The whole bargain is getting a pick for providing cap relief. It's one way to buy a pick and not lose anything for it.

Could still sign Barker, lots of space.

In year 5 of a rebuild, does this Islander team need more picks, or need proven NHL players to compliment the last 5 years of draft picks?

so who else would you rather fill the roster spot with? Have you seen the current corps of Islander D? If we take Redden from the Rangers we will definitely be getting a compensation pick, probably a second rounder. So what?? We have so much to spend and if he really sucks throw him down in Bridgeport or waive him. Lots of teams with cap space will be providing relief and they'll make good on the deals.

you always need draft picks - this team isn't close to making a cup run for another couple of seasons. So take the pick now, and use it as a bargaining chip??

Im tired of this Wade Redden discussion. The isles do not need a second round pick. They do not need a 6.5 million dollar player who hasnt played in the NHL In 3 years. I listed players before who i thought were names the isles could look at via trade.

Do you forget you are talking about the isles who are at the cap floor by way of the Yashin buyout and oft injured Ricky D?

They are close........they need to use the picks NOWWWWW to bring in the talent.

They have done nothing but draft for 5 years. They dont need to stockpile picks. Even if they trade a few picks, they will still have plenty to draft with.

I think Tambellini is going to let his offense get going before he makes any serious moves. Edmonton still won't make the playoffs but they'll be top 10 in goals for, bottom 5 in goals against. The team needs to mature, than they can get the pieces.

really? I see about 22 teams closer. The Isles have a horrible defense, one forward line, and the goaltending situation will forever be in question until the team buys out Double Penetration.

I dont disagree the Oil is top heavy. But, lets see if Tambellini addresses it, or if he just hoards like Snow
