Do you think there is fire here were he sees smoke? Seems crazy to think Vancouver would have B. Schenn as plan B to Grossman in a deal for Luongo unless he mixed up the Schenn's.
- jstross

No, I don't think there is any fire here. At most, Flyers kicked tires.

You really want an 11 year contract that could cripple the organization down the road? I just don't have a handle on the new CBA yet. In Disney all week and only get to check in at night. If I'm GM I don't want any long term deal that could steal cap in case of early retirement.

Flyers have a young explosive offense and while not dismissing the present any deal would have to improve the future(one could obviously argue a Luongo deal does).

- jstross

There'd have to be a plan to 1) move the existing long contract in goal & 2) add defensive help.

But as a simple hockey trade, I'd move Grossmann for Luongo.

Will blog this is in the morning, but here's the gist: First and foremost, I don't see any way, shape or form the Flyers have done anything more than kick tires about Luongo trade price. That would be simple due diligence.

That Grossmann/ B. Schenn scenario makes zero sense. "We'd like to add your no-frills defensive D-man who would be our fourth or fifth defenseman, but if that's too much... um, we'll settle for the highly-regarded young player who was the centerpiece of the Mike Richards trade."

At any rate, the ONLY way I could even remotely fathom the Flyers being involved in a Luongo trade would be if were one of those rare three-way-deal situations where the main pieces are Vancouver getting Brayden Schenn, Luongo ending up in Toronto via Philly, and the Flyers getting Jake Gardiner and Kadri (as was the rumored price tag earlier on Luongo).

No, I don't think that is going to happen or has even been seriously considered. Just saying that's the only way I could see a bit of logic to Flyers involvement.

- bmeltzer

That's pretty much my take. The one "Wildcard" could be Snider with a hair up his ass, but there'd be so many moving pieces and juggling involved, I can't see how it happens

Luongo has to go for sure. Vancouver has 9 open slots in 2013-2104 and $9 million in cap space if Luongo's on the Roster. They'll need more than half that to resign Elder. I think GM's will try to wait them out and see if they buy out his contract. Just a guess at this point.

They'll buy him out if it comes to it, but let's face it, long deal or not, Luongo is at worst, a near elite level goaltender. They aren't going to want to give him away.

Better to trade him for some asset and get a return, than buy him out and continue to write him checks for the next 16 years-even if he's off the cap

I don't think Schenn was TRULY off-limits in a deal for Weber so much as that Poile stood firm that the Predators would only consider Schenn + Couturier + additional assets... and nothing less than that.

Schenn is a very nice young player whom I think will be an impact player in the near future as he develops more consistency and continues to find what works for him at the NHL level. But I don't see him as a player that is so rare to find that you wouldn't trade him under any circumstances.

- bmeltzer

I don't disagree with you, Bill. In fact, I completely agree.

Personally, I just don't think Homer will move him is all. He has stated this in interviews even too and, for once, I actually believe him. He doesn't want to subtract any of the young core players.

So would I. But as you say, they'd obviously need D help in a separate deal.

The D sadly isn't good enough as is.

I agree 100%. It's basically a game of chicken in which Vancouver holds all the cards. Worst case they can get picks for him.

Yup.

I wouldn't mind a depth signing either given some of the FA's left. I don't really trust Lilja or Mesz's achilles.

I wouldn't be amazed if it was a ruse to try and drive up the price the Leafs would pay.

Let's face it, the Flyers are aggressive enough to make the rumor somewhat plausible. So you get a Denver based writer & former player working in Quebec to drum the story, get it going nationally in Canada & the US and light a fire under the Leafs new GM.

If Mesz feels fine then I'd imagine the pairings as follows;

Coby-Grossman
Schenn-Kimmo
Meszy-Gervais
Lilja

An injury would most likely mean a Gus sighting though given his reported play in the AHL this year.

Still, hopefully so long as we're in contention Homer pries a good blue-liner.

Bryz playing like his old self would obviously do wonders for this team though.

There's some slim pickings-Randy Jones, Chris Campoli, Brett Clark, Mark Eaton, Paul Ranger-in FA

If Gus was healthy, he'd figure in my top 6. But he's had a high ankle sprain.

Given that Enstrom and several other pending UFAs got new deals (making the FA market next summer very slim) does anyone regret letting Carle go even for the money that he received in Tampa? Just some food for thought.

I was cool with the cap hit, but not the length of the deal.

Agreed. Trading both Schenns for Weber is a trade I would do.

In such a short season it might not be such a bad thing to bring in Luongo. Short season gives the Flyers a pretty solid chance at going the distance with solid goaltending.

When Bryz goes down, and we know he will, Leighton won't be able to carry us to the Cup Finals again.

Do i want Luongo? No. I do understand the reasoning though. Trade for him and then buyout Bryz at the end of the year, or at the very worst, trade Luongo to Florida at the end of the year.

Maybe a Luongo/Edler deal for something from us. Won't even speculate on what they'd want from us.

I hate Vancouver.

If trading both Schenns was an option i think that deal would have been made.

I also would have traded Schenn+Couterier+picks..

I would have given almost anything they asked for, short of Giroux.

Webers are rare. I'm also not a fan of B. Schenn. His cap hit and what he brings to the table TODAY don't match up for me.

But this is all moot.. didn't happen and i'm left to cry in the dark at night all by myself...

Just going out a limb, Edler alone would probably warrant at least one of the 2 young guys + a 1st. Throw in Luongo, and now both Schenn and Coots are gone, probably a guy like Gustafsson, and a 1st.

I find it funny that people are clamoring over Lugo. The guy is getting pushed off his team.. cant win an important game to save his life, is older than Bryz, has more years left than Bryz, and is getting paid more than Bryz.

To boot, we would need to give up an important player to get him... Just for poops and giggles say the Flyers did trade Grossmann + for Lugo... our defense would be probably the pooptiest in the entire league...

But we'd have 10M+ spent on goaltending. Holmgren is just thinking outside the box

Though I won't put anything past the Flyers brass anymore, this screams of a made up rumor to put pressure on other teams in on Luongo. Since the Flyers do have a reputation as a team that will surprise, they're the perfect target of such a rumor to stir the pot.
