maybe they are going to talk him into walking away from his contract
edit: Redden could refuse the demotion to the AHL, forfeit the remaining two years on his contract and become an unrestricted free agent. |

If your an owner aren't you on the first plane to NYC to get this signed? And if your a player don't you push to vote on it immediately? I really don't get it.. - mrhattrick27
They have to draft a pretty extensive legal document memorializing everything agreed to. Not an easy task, as the last CBA was a few hundred pages long. |

If the new CBA does, in fact, teams to retain % of cap hits, perhaps they can find a team for Redden and only retain approx. 50% of his cap hit. If they don't intend to give him an opportunity to make the team, he might actually be tradeable and the Rangers could shave a little of his cap hit.
Who the hell knows what is possible at this point? |

so the rangers would keep 3.5 million of his cap hit on the roster this season and next? Wouldn't that make it extremely tough to resign Hagelin, Stepan and and Mcdonagh? I'm all for 2n chance and giving Redden an opportunity to restart his career else where. But he has to be bought out, in my opinion. |

Yeh, you're right about the second year. But, it appears that the CBA provides some flexibility as to how a cap hit can be retained. I don't know this to be the case, but perhaps the Rangers can retain a % of the cap hit this year, but not the next.
The other option is you give the guy an opportunity to make the team if your stuck with the hit anyway. |

the only reason to do this is to acquire a player who has a large cap hit at the deadline who they feel could put them over the top for the Cup.
Otherwise, waiting for summer to buy him out is best thing obviously |

That's an interesting question, haven't seen that addressed yet. It appears that a team can absorb 50% of a player's salary/cap hit, for up to 3 players at a time, to a max total of 15% of the Upper cap limit. Haven't seen if it has to be evenly over the remaining term ... I would assume that's the case, but haven't seen anything explicity saying that. |

That is exactly what I'm thinking. If the Rangers do not intend to give Redden a chance of making the team, but have to eat his cap hit anyway, why not try to shave a couple of million of the hit to give themselves some cap flexibility to make another move? Seems to make sense to me, if you can find away to deal with that second year.
But, I honestly have no idea whether Wade Redden can even play anymore. |

But will be even be interested in getting a high-salary player at the deadline? Do we need more elite scorers or defenseman? If we did want that, it would have to be a rental or else we have cap issues next year. Does anybody fit the bill that will be on the market at the deadline? Do we even have assets we can/want to trade away for an elite rental?
If anything I think we would look for depth (3rd line forward, 3rd pairing defenseman). With 5 mil of cap space, and 6.5 if Sauer goes on LTIR, we could have plenty left over for a deadline deal for a borderline top 6 forward or decent defenseman, especially when the salaries are prorated.
I say we bury Redden this year, buy him out the next. Forget the deadweight 3.25 million caphit.

I have no idea what to expect with this team at the deadline. I remember the team in '95 after the lockout really struggling and forced to trade for Pat Verbeek at the deadline. Impossible to know yet. |

All they agreed to was a memo of understanding and the agreement has to be fleshed out with the required legalese. The lawyers will take time to write it up then review it before either side will sign. That way no side slips something in without the other knowing it. |

At worst he stays in Hartford and sucks up $5.6MM of cap space. Best case is maybe he refuses the assignment and sings elsewhere as a free agent opeing that cap space up. |

For NHL fans hoping the league will give you the Center Ice Package completely free, I'm hearing that's not likely. |

He actually only makes $5MM in salary in each of the next two seasons. If he can find a team willing to give him a two-year deal paying him $5MM total he forfeits just $5MM total of what Rangers owe him but he's back in the NHL playing. He might take that trade-off. |

The center ice package will be the only NHL related expenditure I make this year. |
