I wouldn't give Gardiner and a 1st for Lou. No way Burke would do that either. Vancouver needs a second line center and needs to dump this back up tenders salary. That's to much.

Under the new CBA, a team that signs a player to a long term deal remains responsible for the back end of the contract if the player opts for retirement before the contract expires, regardless whether the player has been traded to another team.

So, for example, even though Jeff Carter has been traded twice since signing a long term deal with Philadelphia, the Flyers remain responsible for the cap hit if he should retire before the contract naturally expires.

Hard to believe the Canucks will deal Luongo in the short term. They lose control of the situation and would not be able to moderate the impact of an early retirement. It seems to me they hang unto Luongo until this summer or next and consider a buy out.

Just trade for Tim Thomas and give the B's a few more 1st round picks....

Pretty much every insider has said that Bozak would be part of the package. Do you consider that something worthwhile?
- hertzman

no. that alone is far too much, and you also want more. not a chance.

$5.5M for a legitimate no. 1 goalie is not that bad. They length is obviously an issue, but he's not going to play out the full length of his contract.
- hertzman

And that become an issue, as we now have to take some of the penalty. Utterly moronic.

Careful what you say now. You will look pretty silly in two weeks when you try to tell us the new 34 year old Leafs goalie is the best in the league.

Back to back president's trophys and getting to game 7 of the Finals. Even you Leafs fans must admit that it takes an above average team to do that.
I understand Luongo's contract problems, but he's a terrific goalie. Just trying to encourage you guys to remove the Vancouver hate glasses.

*removes Vancouver hate glasses*

*puts on hankthetank moron glasses* - Gee, I can't wait till Lou is retired and we are still carrying his cap hit . that's going to be awesome. All those, almost playoffs he was supposed to guarantee us were great.9th place was fun. Way better than getting a good draft pick..... oh wait we traded the furture for Lou.

Better?

Taking our problems. He's not a problem. Hes a trade piece. Like I said, I wouldnt want him to go if we didnt have a good replacement. Which we do. The only reason I want him in someone elses jersey is simply to fill some wholes in our roster.

Its beyond me why you think a goalie who is top three in all statistical catagories in the last five years is a problem.........

O well. Your loss in the long run. Enjoy the cellar. If you're not already.

The only problem is the length of the deal. His cap hit is reasonable and he's the best goalie the Leafs would have had in many, many years.

I can't read any more of the stupidity from last night....... complete nonsense. He's not a problem??

You know what, since the team that trades for him is getting with a penalty (larger than VAN, WTF) that severely hampers his trade value. And it was nil to start with.

If Vancouver doesn't trade Lou then they take the full penalty. Hence, if he is traded then the team that takes him is most certainly counting that as part of the payment. that is a big piece of the puzzle.

Nobody wants him/can fit him in, and now he impact the new team's cap negatively if/when he retires. the value just keeps getting lower and lower. It's below rock bottom now. They're going to have to pay to move him.

he's got a terrible deal, he's almost 34, he's in decline and if/when he retires he hits our cap with a penalty.

No biggie.

If you think about it from a business point of view, having Luongo probably means the Leafs make the playoffs every year he's playing for the Leafs. Considering how much money making the playoffs would mean for the Leafs organization, they could potentially think that having him is worth it, even if he retires and the Leafs have to pay a penalty.

More playoff guarantees.....

A 34 year old goalie in decline doesn't match with building a young team. We're not done building yet.

Good point, and we're no means immune from buyout deals (ahem, Tucker), but wouldn't that cap hit (5.3M) be Vancouver's responsibility anyways? Not sure how that works.
