If only there was a way that the league was structured so that weaker teams could eventually become stronger and compete. If only that were possible.
- Aetherial

There is, my friend.

By trading away aging vets to the Leafs for prospects and draft picks.

And I'm sick of it.

Wait, that's not what you meant?

By having them finish 9th this year instead of 14th.

Seriously, the Leafs are going to suck this year. I'm sorry to break this to you, but they are going to suck.

They sucked last year, and while every other GM made moves to make their teams better, Burkie fiddled while watching the CBA process burn.

He traded Schenn for JVR (we were actually OK at wings - we need a centre) and signed the awesome McClement (you are lying to me if you said you know who he was).

Seriously, that's all Burke did to make the team better.

If Burke's plan is to do nothing and let the kids develop, great. Let's do that. I'm actually on board.

If his plan is to panic at the last minute because he hasn't done jack (let's call it Kessel deal redux), I'm not on board. Because last time he did that, it was a disaster. A franking disaster.

I know this pill is going to be bitter, but you really are better off swalling it: the Leafs suck right now. Getting Luongo will get them a bit better. They need to be worse this year, so they can be much better in the years to come.

- Atomic Wedgie

While I agree that Luongo is not the goalie we should be going after, I think you're underestimating the potential of this team to get into the playoffs.

Let's not forget, that with "decent - don't lose games" goaltending, this team was in 6th (competing for 5th) spot in the East last year...

do i want luongo?
not really.....the Leafs aren't really good enough to warrant bringing in an expensive vet on the downslide.......

but with that said, honestly,is it really that big of a deal if the Leafs move Bozak and a middle range prospect for him?
Other than the Kessel deal(which is still debatable to many), what trade has Burke made to warrant all this hysterical concern over a potential Luongo deal.
I don't know why everyone is so damn worked up over it.
Not to mention, not a single Leaf fan can say that it wouldn't be nice to have somebody stop a goddam puck once in awhile.

- Barx

I don't think Burke's gonna make a stupid trade and give up the future for Luongo... but with the new rules in place, it's not a smart move, IMO.

I would have been ok with it before the lockout, at a decent price(like the one you mentioned)... but that was when he could just be waived(mind you, I still thought that we would need to send over a cap-dumpl like Komi).

But now, if he starts sucking, we're screwed.

Loluongo for Bozak and Kadri? Leafs would do that in a second.

I know the Leafs suck, that has nothing to do at all with this discussion.
Getting goaltending wouldn't be 'panicking', they haven't had any in almost a decade.

With the new set-up for drafting, there are even less guarantees.
Also, the cap numbers are far higher than people originally thought, with it going up to 70 mill by year 5 and 90 mill by the end of the CBA.

P.S..you trade Schenn for JVR in a heartbeat regardless of team needs.

its plausible, other teams have gotten better and we havent, it really depends what side of the leafs we see this year.. the surprisingly very good side who was in 3rd place at one point, or the terrible side that lost like 17 straight games

any long losing streaks in a shortened season and you're screwed

Bozak is nothing.

I'm not convinced the Leafs are willing to give up on Kadri.

Funny thing about Toronto: they get ripped for bringing guys up too soon, and then they get ripped for developing guys in the minors.

I think they should send Rielly to the KHL for a year or two to develop - that way, no one will criticize.

Agreed on the trade point.

Schenn lacks foot speed. I fear it will get very, very ugly for him in front of the Philly Phaithful.

Meh, they enjoy tough hockey unlike Leaf fans. He will hit, and stand up for his teammates, play 15 mins and be just one of those guys that does his job.

why would he suddenly start sucking after over a decade of being an upper echelon goalie? Will he decline? Of course.

I don't necessarily disagree but I do like to play devil's advocate (it pays well).

No Lou ....suck ass year ....another year of media scrutiny. Getzlaf, Perry, or any other meaningful player wants to come to T.O. why? Lou does add to the attractiveness of the team (gelled back hair and all).

I think when it's all said and done, this team is neither the 3rd place juggernaut, nor the basement dweller...

I'm not saying I agree with the pro Lu arguments on here, but I definitely understand the line of thinking. If your belief is that we can get into the playoffs with "decen" goaltending, then why not pull the trigger...

I can tell you right now, I wouldn't...but that's only because I still think Reimer can come back to form from his rookie season. If I didn't believe that, I would definitely give the Lu deal a lot more consideration.
