Of course he did. He had nowhere else to go. When rats are backed into a corner, they attack. It was my fault. I surrounded him with common sense and intelligence, it was his only escape plan. - systemtool

Remember all those years ago when the leafs were old and people complained about it and wanted a younger team. Now they are young and they want to blow it up and get old again. - burn
Its insane. Its like nobody learned anything.
You would think the Kane, Toews, Malkin, Crosby, Staal, Ward, Kopitar, Quick examples would be what people would look up to.

Worst case scenario is Luongo retiring at 39 or 40 and the Leafs incurring a $2 million and change cap hit for a retired player for the following three or four years. Best case is Luongo performing well until retirement at age 41 and only costing $1.3 million on the cap for two more years. - Fruitcakenipple
Uh, No.
Worst case scenario is that he does not return to the form of his late 20's. There is EVERY reason to believe that.
The Leafs do not make the playoffs, or don't make any noise if they squeak in.
The Leafs have tied up 5+ more million in cap space at a time when other teams may have to unload decent players.
He doesn't retire and you eat that cap space for the next 7 years on a goalie who maybe isn't even playing on your NHL team anymore OR... he does retire and you eat another couple million in cap space for multi years of his retirement.
Remember, that 2+ or 5+ million will be for multiple years and it will hurt in a market for Free Agents that is always competitive.
What does Luongo *really* get for us now? A cup?
... or does he really just make sure we get a WORSE draft pick?
This is the exact crap the Leafs have pulled that got them into this position in the first place. |

Tim Thomas got better, lost his job to a rookie too, won two Vezina's, a Conn Smythe and a Stanley Cup all after turning 35...just sayin. |

Let's say Kessel doesn't see the playoffs before his contract runs out with the Leafs. Do you think he'll want to sign again in Toronto?
IMHO, getting a guy like Luongo shows to the players currently in the Leafs system that they are willing to spend in order to win. It's a positive message. - Pecafan Fan
We need all the good players we have. Trading anyone valuable to the team makes no sense in the long run, then you add penalties in the future.
I don't want any more short sighted plans. |

This rational, fact filled logical post is just drivel.
We should be outbidding ourselves to get him. Should be able to get it done with gardiner, Reilly, kadri, and a few 1sts.
Shouldn't cost too much

Luongo is what this team needs. He provides leadership, consistent goaltending, and instills much needed confidence our defense hasnt had in a decade. A luongo / reimer combination would be steller... one of the best duos in the league.
Luongo unquestionably makes the leafs much better and a playoff contender. Im sick of the leafs missing the playoffs... rebuilding is over. the core is in place and they must gain playoff experience and a winning mentallity.
I would like to know full details of the buyout clause before making a trade. I heard it takes affect at the end of this season and end of next season? If this is the case i 100% make the trade. A buyout of Lu after two seasons would pay for itself practically just through playoff revenue... And if not it'll just be less money the leafs give to profit sharing anyways. If the leafs get two buyouts they should use them. Komi has 1 year left after this season. Maybe JVR is a bust (doubtful) but who else would this buyout be used for that helps the leafs more than Lu? |
