I don't think getting Luongo would cost THAT much.
- Pecafan Fan

Oh no...not at all.

Just 10 years of a 5 million cap hit. Peanuts.

Oh...let us not forget giving up young assets.

poop, hes practically free.

So @DarrenDreger reports Gardiner may be a while in his recovery. Do Leafs audition Rielly in regular season games in his spot? Both are LD.

Thats the plan i believe...Didn't RC say that yesterday??

Sure they do, they do every year. Also want a cup.

Making the playoffs shouldn't be the goal.

What is it that concerns you so much about Luongo? What we have to give up? Which would be next to nothing, or at the very least nothing that we really have in our plans. His contract? $5.5 million for a bona fide top notch goalie is more than fair. Contract length? Yes, its long, but essentially its the last three years which are bad, we'd take a hit of about 2.3 million for three years. Cap will probably be about 90 million by then, so is 2.3 million really that bad? Think of the benefits. Leafs make playoffs, don't win much, but playoff experience for young kids is invaluable. Helps in attracting star players here during UFA period.

Meh...take it in stride. My problem with the situation, is that we're not a bottom 5 team in a shortened season even without a good goalie. Even though I like how he's come along, we don't need to draft another Kadri-type at 9th overall and wait 5 years for him to maybe develop. The upside to adding Luongo, is that we have a good chance at making the playoffs, and restoring Toronto as an option for top-end UFA....like certain individuals that will be after this season.

Yes. Like the Habs and their pressure to go out and get Kaberle?

How did that work out for you.

There is pressure, but there is also pressure to not make the mistakes of the past. IE young assets for mid 30 year olds.

May I remind you that Gauthier was fired?

Hard to say now. Half the season's gone so they saved themselves that much in salary, so they might keep him another year (1A/B tandem) and see if the market's better next year when Theodore's contract is up.

The principle remains the same no matter what the GMs name is.

Trading young assets for a mid 30 year old is never the answer for a team should be rebuilding. Especially one that is under contract until the age 43-44.

Throw on top that you were a lottery team the year before and it has disaster written all over it.

Each year that Vancouver waits to trade him, the cap hit penalty goes up for them, and it goes down for the team receiving him.

Something to keep in mind

Yeah, but what's the hit? How's it calculated? As per Capgeek, Lou has a cap hit of 5.3M until he's 43. So if he retires at 40, how does that get split between TO and VAN?

Well the first clue that he wasn't fine was when the Leafs said he had whiplash. We now know that whiplash in Leaf jargon is concussion

The rumors are starting with bozak. That to me is already too much. They're also saying a prospect ( some have said kadri) and some have also said a pick.

The endless Lu to Toronto rumor blogs that we will be reading the next few days is so much better then the poke-my-eyeballs-out legalese lockout blogs....

Let's say Kessel doesn't see the playoffs before his contract runs out with the Leafs. Do you think he'll want to sign again in Toronto?

IMHO, getting a guy like Luongo shows to the players currently in the Leafs system that they are willing to spend in order to win. It's a positive message.

- Pecafan Fan

I dont care about the message.

What matters is the pattern of our past failures and empty cupboards will be repeated.

Rumor is bozak (already overpaying) + a prospect (possibly kadri) + a pick. Yeah I'm worried about what we are giving up. 2 young canters when we have a lack of depth at Center on the team and in the organization.

10 years for a guy almost 34, who is in decline.

A cap penalty for us when he retires.

Oh nothing to be worried about at all

It's a bit far off. More realistic is Gaunce, Kassian, a 1st and Luongo for Komisarek. That's the price of having the Leafs buy out your mistake.
