Great explanation by Lebrun using the Luongo contract if traded and he retires early.

- Symba007

"In the original formula, if a player like Roberto Luongo was traded and retired before the end of his deal, the Canucks (the team who signed him to the contract) would assume his remaining $5.33-million cap early hit in retirement. The new rule in this tentative agreement is different. Now, for any contract in excess of six years, both teams involved in a trade on a contract like Luongo’s would be penalized if he retired before the end of his deal".

Well, he completed one that Murray had a good start on, then he got a good start on one himself, but left it for Gillis, who is trying to complete it, now he's working on one from scratch, since most of the pieces were completely missing when he started, and he had to go search for some.

We didn't do too bad with the last player we acquired who was recovering from a serious back injury, maybe we're trying to corner the market on them.

We could even get Gary Roberts to train them all for us.

Would they split the cap penalty? It would be bizarre if both teams had to endure his full cap hit, not to mention that it makes buying him out this summer or next summer seem like the safest option long-term of Aquillini is willing to pay the big bucks for the better of the franchise.

What a (frank)ing mess.

It's split between both teams but it has to hurt his trade value big time...

The canucks are not currently over the cap, and with the given Ballard buy out they will have about about 9 under the cap next yr. Got anymore stories
- Bieksa#3

true. $9m. Except, that's with 11 players to sign, including Edler, and a top 6 forward.

Unless you're plunking in some near league min players in those spots, it can't be done. And if you are, the team is taking a major hit.
