Dunno.. in our offense first system I doubt you coukd have enough 30 goal guys... hes a heck of a defensive player too..

Bobby Ryan is not a heck of a defensive player.

You don't consider taking the year off to "focus on friends, family and faith", while under contract, a little nutty? Maybe not crazy, but not too cool to screw your team like that. I don't know what owner or player would want him on their team...plus he's old.

I think his political views upset you.

He's a good offensive Winger. The Flyers have bigger needs.

That just says that he's an offensive player, not a very good defensive player.

What am I supposed to say to that? You know.. with all that solid info you brought to the debate.

You can say whatever you want. Is that what your basing Ryan being a very good defensive player on?

Bottom line is that the Flyers have limited assets both in terms of trade-able assets and Cap space. A scoring line Winger is not where the Flyers should use those limited assets on.

I didn't say that you did say otherwise. I just gave my opinion that calling a Bobby Ryan a heck of a defensive player is a huge reach. He is defensively responsible, but that's as far as it goes.

The trouble is, +/- is not a good indicator of a player's defensive abilities. Look no further than Mike Green of the Caps, who is subpar defensively on his best days.

One has to delve deeper into the picture to see what Ryan does. First, most of his good +/- numbers were achieved when the Ducks made the playoffs. In 2008-09 & 2010-11 the Ducks were a playoff team, and in each of those years Ryan had very good +/- numbers (+13 & +15). In the non playoff years, Ryan is a +10 combined, which is a solid number.

Looking into advanced stats, however, we see that Ryan was not tasked with difficult defensive roles. In fact, in one of those seasons, Ryan had the second easiest level of competition on the roster, among forwards. So, while he is doing his job, he's not being asked to handle a ton of heavy lifting defensively.

From what I've seen, Ryan is an adequate defensive player. It's far from his calling card, and he's never been tasked as a two way player to the levels that he'd likely be asked to handle as a Flyer(assuming he'd play with Giroux or Briere)

Not really. Citizens should respect the office regardless of who.

And all that makes sense. That's how a player like Bobby Ryan should be used. He's put out there for key offensive situations, to use the assets he has as a player properly.

It was telling, to me, that the Ducks leaned far more heavily on their other two stud scoring forwards(Ryan Getzlaff & Corey Perry) for defensive play than they did on Ryan during that time period.

I wonder if the Flyers would have any interest in guys like Campoli, Foster, or even Randy Jones. Those guys fit the bill for what the Flyers lack much more than the fringe 6/7 guys like Gervais/Lilja.

The blueline depth is compromised with MAB, and Gusty sidelined long term.

Campoli and Jones fit what they need better than Foster. Foster's not especially mobile, but he's got size and a good shot. Gervais is similar to Jones and Campoli, perhaps not as high a ceiling as them, but not significantly worse.

The trouble is, if a team has to rely on Campoli, Jones or Gervais for more than 15 minutes or so, night in and night out, they're in trouble
