I was just wondering who would be the next NHL commish.

I don't think Burke has the experience the owners will want. He has their respect though, and the players' respect for the most part.

- Aetherial

Not to mention he's actually been in the game for 4 decades or so. Not something the League would be interested.

I think the owners will pick Burke because he is respected by the players.

All of his little policies, like his own self imposed trade deadline at Xmas time puts him in good steed with the players.

He is adamant about no contract circumventing, which will make most owners happy.

I think its a good fit

Prior to this lockout yes........... remains to be seen if he still gets a vote of confidence once this is over
- faceto27

It will be very hard to fire Bettman. From what ive read/heard, it would take 75% of the owners to vote in favour of letting him go. Very difficult, but that doesnt mean they're all happy with him.

Very surprised that the owners allowed Bettman to amend their constitution that requires 75% of them to do so.

Very strange

Give Gary props for pulling that off, enabling job security for himself

Here is a question for you...

Nobody knows exactly what the owners have laid out for Bettman at the "end game" stage of this, where we are now.

The owners have not been present for the latest rounds of negotiations though.

I think Bettman has a set of parameters he can work within. I also think that there are conditions under which he has been given the go ahead to cancel the season.

Others feel that is nothing more than purposely leaked rhetoric or pure fabrication.

So... do you think he has that go-ahead or no? Under which conditions?

I'd like to think that he has the go ahead to cancel the season, but only, ONLY, if it is such a bad deal for the owners, that they couldn't live with it.

I doubt they are all happy all the time.

The thing is, look at the labor strife and franchise problem history in the NFL, the best of the NA sports leagues.

It is wholly unreasonable to think anyone could keep owners of teams which operate under wildly different conditions all happy all the time.

The PA faces the exact same thing. They cannot get everything for everyone. A 4th liner with a 3 year career, at best, has far different concerns than the supertstars of the league.

Yeah, I imagine there are "guidelines" on how bad that deal has to be.

I also suspect that he can cancel the season at his discretion (primarily) if the players file a DOI and a deal does not appear to be close.

If the owners wanted Bettman gone, he would be gone.

This whole thing about somehow he has legally wrangled for himself absolute power and the owners are helpless, is silly.

Fact...

Since the lockout that cancelled the NHL's 2004-05 season, Bettman's salary has more than doubled. In that year, he made $3.7 million.

I don't think he cleverly orchestrated his own job security.

this whole court route........ that is a very slippery slope

I doubt either one wants to go that route.

Fehr may want to, just so to possibly cement his legacy. Or it might be his greatest downfall.

Hopefully we will never have to find out. If it went that route. It would be a nuclear winter for a few years.

Then this has nothing to do with Bettman, but is a case in point with anyone running the ship. Which is why its not fair to say the owners are happy with Bettman, as opposed to "its just the way it is"

the final outcome of the WJC may of been a blessing in disguise for the NHL

lets be honest.. the canadian and large US markets will be fine once the lockout end regardless.

the ones who will suffer are the smaller and/or non traditional hockey markets in the states

but now, with the US winning gold, the feeling about hockey in the states right now is positive, and will be for the next couple of days at least.

if the NHL and PA are smart.. they will compromise and get a deal done in the next couple days and ride the positive vibe in the US to help recoup some of the american fanbase that this lockout has probably cost them.

the time is now gents, get it done.

And how much have the players salary gone up? They got raises from those same owners too...hurting themselves in the process.

Join me, a fan, in locking out the NHL for a change!!!!

Hockey is the top professional sport for me. I am a diehard hockey fan and diehard Flyers fan. I didn't think there would be anything in the world that would stop me from watching hockey........

Well, it has happened. I am done. No, am not just saying that now and when they start I'm all in. I'm done! I am so disgusted by this that I don't want to see them play because all I'm going to think about when I watch a game is how half a season was missed because of a fight over making too much money and how to split it???? I'm done this season and next at least.

I hope most fans feel the same and as much as I hate it, we all ignore hockey for a good while. Don't watch, don't go to games, nothing! Both sides are a disgrace. They made too much money off us, the fans, and cancel the games we love to go fight over all the extra money we, the fans, gave them! Now I'm supposed to just come back......again? You're out of your mind!

Gary Bettman said it best at the start of the lockout. 'We know our fans will be there when we play again just as they did in 2004-2005.' And yeah, I was back right away that season. Why? Because those changes were needed. Fans, while still ticked, understood why. This, I find it sick that Bettman and Fehr are playing games because they believe we'll all just come back once the lockout is over.

I can't in my right mind come back and support a league who obviously just assumes I'll support them when they could care less about the league or the fans. How could they care when the NHL had been waiting for years to start really growing and finally, it started! As soon as it starts, they pull this. If you truly cared about the game, the history, the fans, how do you let that happen? You wouldn't! You'd be playing under the old CBA, which everyone made great money under, and continue to negotiate a new CBA while playing.

In 8 years they have taken a season and a half away from us. It's time for us to lockout the NHL. They are fighting over money, the money we give them!

So, the longer this goes, the longer we ignore when they come back, starting with the season lost in 04-05. So right now I'm done for a season and a half.

I'm locking out the NHL. I'm not showing up, reading, buying or watching anything NHL. Maybe if we as fans lock them out for a change, they'll finally feel what they put us through and maybe finally realize that they punish the people who give them the billions they're fighting over!

So to the Players & Owners...I hope you believe you both got a good deal when it's done. I do! And then I hope fans don't show up! Because that good deal you wasted games for, you'll both realize it means nothing when your revenue now goes through the floor because we don't come back! Good job! You worked a new deal assuming we'd all still be there and you would still be seeing record revenue. You never gave a thought that the deal means nothing without us! I hope to god it backfires on you. I hope that if you both had signed a deal that wasn't as greedy, but you lost no games, you find that you would have made more money from that CBA than you will from this one. I can only hope!

-Disgusted hockey fan in PA

BRILLIANT!!! I could say send it to Bettman or Fehr but they simply don't care about the fans. The Owners? No, cause they listen to Bettman the weasel. The players? NO cause they are so bloody selfish, they have their head up their ass's. So sadly as brilliant as this post is, the lockout is beyong the point of insanity. Nothing can get through to anybody in the NHL office or the NHLPA.

After reading this brilliant post, I now realize nothing can save this season. I have OFFICIALLY given up. I do not believe there will be a season.

Kudos to u on this great post, not your fault, that Bettman, Fehr, the owners & the players are all a BUNCH OF SELFISH, SELF CENTERED< EGOTISTICAL F*CKEN AS*HOLES!!!!! I SAY F U TO EM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
