That's the worry as Bill stated before. Such a versatile guy, I don't want to lose him, but decisions are gonna have to be made. Just blows my mind that Bettman is catering to the bottom feeder teams that can't make ends meet because no one cares in their particular City while the bread winners are getting screwed.

I've always liked Mike smith's game, but you have to think he will be re signed. Still irks me we abandoned Bob, but that's the cap. If the cap goes down, we may have to get rid of Bryz, maybe Briere and then replace Timonen with some scrub.. Bettman's plan to screw us will be in fulll effect lol.. The final four will be Phoenix Columbus Florida and the Islanders. LOL

All kidding aside, Homer normally finds a way to navigate through the cap waters.. I just think the org will get rid of Bryz unless he completely poops the bed this short season.

you think they will or they won't?
i'd keep him unless he bombs, and also wish they had just kept bob

i think briere will be the buyout, too many centers

I think he eventually gets shipped to Edmonton for Hall, Eberle or Yakupov.

I was thinking about that earlier. With the cap going down etc, this is going to mean that Nashville is screwed when it comes to fielding a competitive roster. They already have big bucks committed to Rinne and Weber.. gotta be a hard pill to swallow for them.. Not to mention they had to fork over 10 mil to Weber before the lockout began and now are losing money with no hockey. If the season gets axed, it's gotta be a mess for them. Theyre gonna have to borrow money from Carrie Underwood.

I think they keep him unless he's a real bust next year. I don't see us shifting gears back to Leighton/Boucher kinda thing. My philosophy has always been you can't have too many guys in the system. Nashville does it this way, and they now have Rinne.. They played the odds of drafting lots of tenders looking for that star and they got him. We never draft a tender and just hope to patch something together with UFA's.

Not sure about Briere, but something's gotta give.

Same here. I defend Bryz because 1) he's a Flyer and 2) he was never as bad as some made him out to be, but I felt Bob and a capable back-up was the way to go into last season and the future.

I think Carrie buys the team cause they can't make payroll and she makes Fisher the GM. They go back to the mustard jerseys and rename them the american idols.

Blue-chip goalie prospects are much harder to gauge than forwards, as you know. The Flyers prefer to stock up on forwards in their drafts and then trade them for someone else's developed d-men and goalies.

Some are arguing that he was terrible all year which is not true. Those arguing that we might need to take him off the books with a new CBA are making a solid point. If you can't afford him and ice a competitive team, he's gotta go.

Really, I think he's gonna be better now that he's adjusted a bit, and I think cheaping out on tenders when you are thin on D is a recipe for no playoffs.

Yep, but you see my point. I'd like them to shift their strategy like Nash did. They drafted Rinne, Pickard, Lindback, and a few others hoping one would pan out. He did and they had another chip to bargain away when Lindback panned out. A tender is like a QB in football. Build from the crease out and you just might get a Brodeur/ Lundqvist type. I can't imagine how nice it must be as a fan of those teams to just pencil in the tender for a decade knowing it's not even a discussion.

That's a good point but you have to remember that Nashville doesn't have the luxury of being able to lure & sign big name FAs like the Flyers do. I wouldn't be opposed to the Flyers drafted a few goalies in the 1st or 2nd round over the next few years but it's hard to argue with the recipe they've used for their drafting.

I do agree with you, building from the Goalie out is how Keith Allen built his Flyers Cup teams. It's how the Flyers *were* built this past season until Pronger went down, really. They had Bryz/Bob and then a solid set of D.

I just think how they get their D & G will be through FA & trades.

Agreed.

But it is what it is now, Bryz is the man for now.

(Bernier and Holtby are interesting thoughts, though.)

Well this is comical:

Gary Bettman infuriated players across the table from him at NHL headquarters on Thursday — and, by extension, NHLPA membership — by claiming that a number of general managers had told him they regret some of the contracts they’d previously handed out and would welcome the opportunity to “dismantle” their teams in order to meet the steep drop to the league’s proposed $60 million cap for 2013-14, sources have told The Post.
The players responded with a mixture of anger and skepticism, demanding to know the identity of these alleged GM’s. Bettman refused to name the straw men in seeking to counter the players’ position that adopting a $60M cap — even with two amnesty buyouts — would be punitive against big-market, big-spending franchises.

what a joke....if this is true, i have lost all faith...Either way, the owners should get rid of bettman.

Agreed. Sure, he's "Mr. Playoffs," but how many Cups have they won with him?

Would not having him really reduce the likelihood of a Cup?

They lured and signed that Weber guy. I heard he was a pretty big name FA.

Anyways, I thought it was the players who were initially pushing the buyout idea.

My opinion is the owners need to replace him either way....three lockouts is way to many...I think after this one he goes.

That's a completely different beast. Technically they did "sign" him. If he had been a UFA, he may very well have chosen Philly, especially considering some of the reports that came out over the summer. At the end of the day, he just wanted the 14 year mega deal before the CBA expired whether it was with the Preds or Flyers.

Agreed.

My point was that when it comes down to it, owners/GMs don't make business decisions when it comes to signing players - despite all the disingenuous hand wringing about "the business" during the lockout.

They act on ego, not dollars. Therefore, any team can/will sign a big name whether it actually makes sense to do so.
