They need the players. The league as we know it would collapse with your thought process of bringing in all new players and thus the talent level would diminish in the short term. Maybe not in Canada, but in the USA, definately.

i never once claimed it was optimal, just saying its possible.

the league would have a major downturn at first sure.. but it would eventually correct itself.. players have shelf lives.. the league ran fine before any of these guys were born.. it has run fine when the WHL pried away alot of top level talent, same with the KHL to a lesser extent.

people still came and watched.

If the commish in Basketball gets all of the praise for increasing their players salaries, why would Bettman not get the same for the hockey players..Stern is a God in the NBA.. Bettman is the NHL scape goat.
