They both need each other. To say that one can function as is, without the other is nonsense
- faceto27

the NHL could function without the players.. its just that the quality of the play would be less that great for the first couple of years til the young stars come up through the development systems.

the players however have to nowhere to work if there are no leagues. they cant go on even at a lesser level.

the owners could.

also, if this scenario took place i would bet that most NHLers would be lining up for whatever pay they could get in a non union league.... so really.. other than the generational talents who could afford to sit back and retire.. the quality of the game probably wouldnt be reduced all that much.. in would fix itself in 2 or 3 years as the new younger players are brought in.

I find it baffling that you have to explain the difference between no shows and re-schedules...

New all time low on HB.

I find it baffling that you guys are still arguing over who has or hasn't showed up on time to the meetings that none of us were involved in.

yeah, its disrespectful

I will give Fehr this.. his tactics seem to work.. but I do not respect them at all.

- Dozzer

It doesn't matter whether you like the tactics or not, Fehr was hired by the players to get the best he could for them. How he does it, is irrelevant. If it pisses the owners off, so be it. If it pisses the fans, so be it.

He works for the players.

Interesting.

So if the Leafs played in an outdoor pile of crap rink would people still pay the same for the 'poduct'?

The fact you're having this debate with Leafs fans is hilarious...

We've missed the playoffs for 9yrs(?) now, and have iced one of the worst products in the NHL over that time, yet we sell out every game, and have the highest merchandise sales...

Its his job to grow the sport.

The owners obviously think he's doing a good job.

And the players pay has risen 10X since he started this job, so maybe he had nothing to do with that, but I would think he might have something to do with it.

- robin_steele264

with or without Bettman the players salaries would have increased.
In fact, the players having an increased salary is what the owners are complaining about. LOL

One time 30 goal scorer....ONE TIME.
Had the leafs not had his 30 goals that one season.....how much worse would they have been?
I like Kuli but in the grand scheme of things...with or without him....what change would it hace had?

- Fakepartofme

Yes, one time. You said even the 30 goal scoring Kuli doesn't make a difference for the Leafs. It's impossible to quantify how many less games a team would win without one player. Stating that it doesn't matter whether a team has a 2-way 30 goal scorer or not is a ridiculous comment.

There's a huge difference between re-sheduling a meeting and being late without giving notice...

How do you not see that?

I suppose that makes another Dman prospect better than Corrado.

114,000 people were willing to watch the Leafs and Red wings play outdoors in a football stadium

Im sure the players could afford to build a 114,000 seat stadium... and that novelty would NEVER get old.

Show me where the NHL was late to a meeting without giving prior notice to the PA.

For once...substantiate your position with a fact. PLEASE.

not showing up on time is 100% different from rescheduling a meeting

If that was the case, then the owners would have told the players to go (frank) themselves long ago.

They need the players. The league as we know it would collapse with your thought process of bringing in all new players and thus the talent level would diminish in the short term. Maybe not in Canada, but in the USA, definately.

You're absolutely right...

But with that said, arguing that the NHL has instituted the same tactics as Fehr is just asinine.
