In fairness, they never needed to. As Adam English pointed out, they never had elite players worthy of giving big contracts to. Cap space hasnt been an issue for Toronto. Finding the right guys to build around has been their downfall.

saying they have 8 roster spots to fill is misleading.. they still have 11 forwards and 5 defensemen under contract for that year..

so really.. only 7 spots to fill.. half of which will go to rask.

the extras can be fringe guys.. signed for less than a mill each, lets say an average of 700K (x4)

bringing up their total to 6.3million to fill the roster

giving them a cap compliant total of approx. 59.6mill

and i dont think rask will get a raise.. for him to ask for more now would be a bit premature... he hasnt proven he is a capable full time starter yet.. what if he flounders this season? (if there is a season) he might not even get that.

One constant thread through the last few months, is that the NHL would want to at least salvage a 48 game season.

I don't know about you, but I would not equate a team that wins the Stanley Cup after a 48 game season, with one that was won in the (now) traditional 82 game season. To me it wouldn't mean as much, and I suspect the players would not regard it (a Stanley Cup Win) in the same light either.

An asterisk would be there, regardless if it was visible or not.
