Does a no-trade clause block a buyout?

both lombardi and connolly are FA after this season tho.. by the time the buyouts happen (likely in the offseason) they wouldnt even be under contract any longer.

also, something to consider here... if gardiner is shelved for awhile and franson is locked in overseas for the entire season, the leafs D looks a lil sparse heading into the season.

phaneuf, liles, gunnarsson, komisarek, gysbers, and ?

- Dozzer

Franson is not locked in till end of season. He can leave whenever the NHL season begins, if he so chooses.

We're assuming there are teams willing to trade a bad contract than to buy it out. Vinny has a NTC. Im sure he would rather be bought out, then resign with another team and make as much as he can than to accept a trade to a bottom feeder. There are few teams willing to give up assets instead of money, and there arent many big ticket contracts worth giving up alot just to get rid of.

all the leafs need is one small market team looking to get out of a contract with something to give to make it worthwhile

just one. not saying its a no brainer, but def feasible

Don't think so. Darcy had a no-trade clause.

Franson isn't locked in. He can leave any time to rejoin the Leafs. They just have to sign him. I also think Holzer or Kostka should get a shot at the bigs if the team is that thin. Both seemed to have earned it with their play on the Marlies.

yeah well they will have to consider that moving forward.. if they can get out from under that contract it may be worth their while

they can always sign a couple FAs to get back to the floor.

I understand the concept, but its assuming there are many instances to actually deem it a viable plan as opposed to just buying out your own headaches. Toronto needs Komisareks salary off the books befoe the cap drops to 60, and I dont see how that happens without him being bought out. Toronto still has to resign Lupul...then improve the team on top of that...we need the cap space to take advantage of others teams trading good players due to cap restraints.

The point Dozzer is making there are alot of teams that are losing money, therefore, they would rather trade their bad contract as opposed to spending cold hard cash to do so.

Again, I understand the point, but im not sure there are as many teams out there willing to do this as one would believe. Also, we have our own cap to deal with and Komisarek is our biggest obstacle. It may not be wise to turn a blind eye to our own bad contracts just to add a pick or prospect. If the Leafs keep their picks, they'll likely be good ones as it is.

There could be teams out there willing to trade good players due to cap restraints, and thats what the team should focus on more. That, and making sure theyre in good position for when th cap drops to 60 million which Komi would have a big impact on.

Komi is a bad contract for ONE year. There are plenty of other contracts that are longer term.

Oh lord...forget it. You're right, there are worse contracts to be bought out on Toronto than Komi's.

The concept of the cap dropping to 60 million means the Leafs can afford to keep Komi. You're right.

I cant wait for him to resign or be traded elsewhere just so I dont have to hear this fairytale anymore. Unicorns and Leprechauns are great and all, but lets not pretend they'll be coming over for dinner any time soon.

why does it have to be a current leaf?

in all fairness komi is the only one worth considering.. but after this year he only has one more year so is it worth it?

the leafs would be smart to make a trade for a bad contract. they could offer to take on the bad contract so long as it came with a solid young player or prospect, then buy out the contract they took. this way the leafs could use their wealth to buyout another teams bad contract and be compensated for doing so with picks, prospects, or youth

- Dozzer

Not a bad idea if the time frames work and the rules allow for it.

Also... what would be funny to see is the owners all decide to NOT buyout contracts.

It would be pretty tough to get a collusion and damages conviction for "continuing to pay your contracts".

Why would they do that, when they can just buyout their own bad contract?

I'm talking about another team.

Why would another team trade young valuable players, just to get rid of a bad contract, when they can just buyout that bad contract?

Look at it this way.

Would you trade Kadri, just to get rid of Komisarek? Or would you just buy Komisarek out?

A number of teams can't afford to buy out their bad contracts. If their already losing money, can they really afford to whip out millions to get rid of a contract?

That team is already on the books to pay that salary, whether they keep him or buy him out. So why wouldnt they rather just keep him than buy him out?
