The idea of a pension plan if for the 4th line type guys with short career, the top guys don't care about it.

well if they are only in the NHL for a few years they have lots of time to earn a pension like the rest of us...not to mention they still make millions in that short career. If you are not good enough to stick in the NHL why do you deserve some massive pension.
