I know I sound stupid, but...why would they want to do that?

Proceeding with anti-trust litigation is the so-called nuclear option, taking this battle to court. Right now, they're in the process of making that option available.

At least, that's how I understand it.

We'll know very soon. Either we'll have a short season in 2013, or we'll have a very messy situation on our hands.

Well, in the mean time at least I'm not getting locked out at the Springfield Ice Rink (that is, unless I don't pay )

My simplistic understanding of the lockout is this: the current contract is up and the season can't start until they have a new one, the players want a bigger piece of the pie than they got in the last agreement and the owners don't want to give it to them. They can't agree on anything. How does dissolving the Players Union get the players a better contract? Why would the owners owe the players anything if the Union is dissolved?

I took my son to his first Flyers' practice in 2004. We got to see Marcus Ragnarsson break Dennis Seidenberg's leg.

Well, it's certainly not about the players getting a bigger piece, as negotiations have settled on their share of HRR going from 57% down to 50%.

In a nutshell, the NHL started with enormous demands in their initial proposal, the NHLPA said no and essentially stalled. The NHL reduced some of their demands in their next proposal some time later, the NHLPA's reaction did not change. And it's more or less continued like that. Lots of posturing, grandstanding, and time wasting from both sides along the way.

The thing about dissolving the union is they can sue the NHL for locking them out in an anti-trust suit and attempt to recover damages from the lockout. In short, the gloves would be off, it's the final options when the union feels there's no way to negotiate a fair deal. That's really the best way I can put it without the both of us taking some courses on law.

How could they sue for locking them them out if it was not illegal to lock them out in the first palce?

It's related to dissolving the union, I'm really not certain on the specifics. Travis Yost has been giving pretty good write ups on this, apparently it's following the NBA's lockout script rather closely.

The part about the players wanting a bigger piece of the pie than they got in the last agreement is untrue. The players have agreed to go from 57% of revenue to 50% of revenue. But they want existing contract honored.

A common sense question. But it is what makes it so bizarre in my opinion. But when is the law about common sense.

I think they are saying the owners are inhibiting their ability a nd right to work, especially for those under contract. Where this logic fails is that there are other entities that can and do compete for their services.

Too bad they (both sides) have let this become personal and not business. As soon as emotion gets attached to business, irrational decisions get made

Heh. It's not like I drove over there figuring I'd see *that* happen. Heck, no injury that freakish has happened since.

Good work as usual bill. As a father of two boys I'd advise you not to wait to take your boy to a game. I used to live in glenside near the trian station and started taking our first to games when he was two. They are definitely my favorite memories of going to games.
- twotoekenn

I took my son and daughter to their first game last year. My son didn't want to go at first because he wanted to stay home with mom-mom and pop-pop while they babysat the twins. Anyway the long and short is once we got there he was ecstatic. I don't force sports on my kids and let them enjoy it at their own pace. So I was surprised when my sister asked him who his favorite player was and he pointed down at ol' 28 and said "him! Claude Giroux that's my favorite player!"

Keep in mind he was 5 at the time I never told him who the best player was or anything like that I did tell him my favorite player was Hartnell tho.

I gotta say with the way things are going in this country I couldn't care less if hockey resumes. I'm just grateful for my family and their safety. Also some of you are pretty cool people so it's good to stay in touch I guess. If anything I hope hockey gets going for the fact that people like Bill can maintain healthy employment.
