Kings are seriously your example of winning without building?

The city is how big? Compared to most cities in the NHL, calling Edmonton a big city (in comparison to the ones in the league) is either a joke or a reflection of your intelligence.

I never said anything was bad about living in Edmonton. Im just saying it ranks near the bottom of options for most players, and there isnt much good about living their either.

- systemtool

I never said anything about how big it was. You made an ignorant comment about all it having is a mall. If you wanna talk about how big it is in comparison to other NHL cities did you stop to think about how big cities like Calgary, Winnipeg, Nashville, Phoenix, Minnesota, Raleigh, and Columbus are??? Yes that is a reflection of my intelligence to be able to look at something on the whole. How exactly can you say there isn't much good about living there??? Oh and BTW Living there, you spell it there not THEIR, an obvious reflection of your intelligence.

Drafted - Kopitar, Quick, Brown, Doughty, Clifford, Nolan, Martinez, King.

The first four played a pretty big role in them winning it all.

Check my comments and facts?

How about the Miami Heat and their spending? How about the LA Kings and their spendings. The Bruins and their spending? The Red Sox. The LA Lakers. Cardinals. Phillies. Mavs, Celtics, Spurs.

It takes a real winner to argue that spending money doesnt greatly increase a teams chances at success.

- systemtool

The Red Sox???? Are you effing High??? They won one championship. They signed players like Crawford, Beckett, Gonzalez to huge deals and how did that work out....... oh yeah, they had to trade em and they finished last in the AL east last year. Do you even think before you type poop out???? It takes a real winner to to look at things subjectively and take things out of context. Like actually read first.

Fair enough, but again, the salary cap prevented teams from focusing on buying and over paying and forced them to build. Better to use the sports where free spending is more permissible when making this case.

And the NHL under the cap is seriously your example of the benefits of building a winner through spending?

Didn't they trade for carter and richards???? Correct me if I'm wrong but you said spending money. They didn't spend, they traded. Big difference than going out and spending money and buying a championship, which is typically done through going out and signing free agents to big $$$.

So?

They rebuilt for years before they got to the point where they had accumulated the assets to get them, and keep their core of star players intact.

Thats spending. Taking on money and big contracts falls into that boat. Once again, with a salary cap the NHL is not the example to be using in this case.

really? You said you don't need to build/draft to win without a cap or any kind of system in place. But Kopitar, Quick and Brown were instrumental in the Kings winning last year.

But ultimately, spending big money on players is what put them over the top.

Once again, due to the salary cap. Also, once again, the NHL with its cap isnt the perfect example of how spending leads to winning.

Which is why everyone ignored all the MLB and NBA examples that prove this theory correct.

Ignorance, and denial, are bliss.

Which team and league shall we use?

The one with the salary cap that prevents buying a winning teams?

Go!

Because you keep using a league with a hard cap as an example.

What I am saying is, in leagues that do not have hard salary caps, more championships are won through spending than drafting/developing.

Why go that far back? It would take too much googling to check all teams rosters almost a decade ago and beyond. Lets use current examples, more accurate.

I have used examples of leagues where there is no hard cap. I went!

Furthurmore, and the most important point in this matter, is that if the NHLPA is gone there wont be a draft. Therefore, spending will be the only way to build your team. THAT is the main point here.

That model doesn't seem to work in hockey though.

Or football really.

Baseball and basketball, where there's only half a dozen teams with a legit shot to win each year... Really only 2-3 in basketball.... Seem to certainly favor the huge spenders.

But we are hockey fans I think.

To the best of my knowledge, the only teams in the NHL it's ever worked for is the New York Rangers in 1994.

Actually they have won 7 total. They have been consistently the top spending team in the MLB since 2000 and they have 2 as you put it. That sure is the formula for winning championships.
