The PA wants a 5 year CBA for one reason, to keep from settling for 50%.
Their offers to date do not actually have them reaching 50/50 until "sometime later". If they can squeeze more make whole cash from the owners, they might not actually reach 50/50 until somewhere around the 4th or 5th year. This is especially true if revenues go down.
This was also the reason Fehr wanted a guarantee of no dollar decreases based on revenue, AND he wanted a minimum cap... both severance from the % HRR they clearly lied about, and BOTH are very likely to happen.
It also perfectly explains why now the players demand to be made whole when the contracts were not guaranteed to begin with.
This is also the reason they want longterm contracts... so they can receive more than 50/50 with the idea of "paying later" in terms of cap hit, which can occur with some variance being allowed. Of course they never actually intend to pay later... it will all be worked over in the next CBA negotiations.
It ALL boils down to dollars and cents and 50/50, and never actually getting there.
So,
The net of what Fehr has been offering would likely NEVER see the players hit 50/50 until near the end of a 5-year CBA.
... they get to call it 50/50
... The players get to whine about going from 57 to 50 (when they don't have even 57)
... long term contracts with some variance keeps 50/50 from being reached.
But, they never actually settle for only 50% and after 5 years, Just as revenues would be booming again, and the 100th anniversary is coming... BOOM they strike.
Fehr knows this. The NHL knows this. The PA knows this, and about 1% of the PA might even understand this. - Aetherial

The San Francisco Bulls ECHL team is playing a game at The Shark Tank in San Jose next week. Tickets went on sale this morning at 10am and sold out in 5 min. Seeing as how San Jose is "not a hockey city" I can just imagaine how quickly people in Canada, NYR, Boston, etc will ruch to get their tickets once this is over and the shortened season is finally announced. NHL and PA know this. |

My cousin moved to the SJ area last year. He was shocked at how much of a "Hockey City" it is. He also said the Men's leagues out there are pretty fast. Good for SJ. Some cities should take note. |

agreed. Everyone is talking tough now " NHLPA and Betts can go F themselves.".....30 days after they strike a deal, every jackass in TO will be buying 15.00 beer and watching a crap team again. |

Read the article. I really enjoyed the part about the players whining about giving up too much and not gaining anything...."In my mind the pension is the only thing we can point to as a gain"
They do understand they are locked out, and not on strike, right?
They keep acting as though they are in control and want just as much given to them, but that is not the case. The NHLPA is locked out so the NHL can get a realistic handle on wage hikes and control wage spending.
Seems pretty obvious. |

Niklas Kronwall knows that a new CBA needs to put into place soon if a shortened 2012-13 season is going to take place.
"Time is running out, clock is ticking, no doubt," he said. However, Kronwall said the time crunch won't force the players' union from accepting a deal that hurts their the future class of players. "We're in this for the better of the game and for the next generation, as well," said the Detroit defenseman. "Of course, anyone can just look in the mirror and say, 'What would be best for you?' But you also owe yourself and the next generation the best possible. So that's something we're very concerned with."
Fehr has them convinced they are fighting the good fight for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The season is toast. |

But wait....no news is good news, yet Ek is hearing good news from the 'inner circle' of players. Doesn't that make it bad news? |

Again, the players speaking as if this were a player strike! This wasn't their choice and yet they're making out like they're calling the shots. |
