its not that so many people disagree that luongo makes the leafs better, he does, but its how much better?

to me.. its not negligible, but it certainly isnt enough to do anything more than maybe squeak into the playoffs imo

- Dozzer

I hate to be the guy who plays the "all you need to do is get in and anything can happen" card, but there is value in making the playoffs even if you do not get out of the first round. It builds a winning culture and that is very important. I personally think that missing the playoffs year after year damages the players on this team in so many ways.

IF the goal is to make the playoffs or at least try to make the playoffs...Lou alone will not do that. Than yes.
If the goal is to continue the losing tradition and show UFA's Toronto has no interest in winning and go for a high draft pick...than sure....keep the current goalies.

I'm sure the UFA's will be charging down Burkes door

Not sure why people have a hard time realizing this.

That the leafs are much better? Maybe slightly better..
He had a .919 on the Canucks... highly unlikely he improves on the leafs
He is probably a 10-15th rank Goalie in the league.

Burke has to think his team is not good enough (always back his goalies), and then work out a deal with his old team, give gillis what he wants.. A lot of things happen before Luongo would be in a leafs uniform.

I agree.
But even if you squeaked into playoffs, you gain needed and valued experience. The team and city then become a little inticing for UFA's.
Also with an top end goalie who can turn it on, a 2nd round appearance doesn't seem as impossible.
This continuous losing has to stop, there needs to be signs of improvement and not just at the Marlie level.

Contract length is not only thing holding up the deal I believe. All the money hasn't been figured out yet.

300 milly ....league offered ....pa accepted ....league pulled it back but it'll be back on the table if they get what they want on the other few issues left.

the only real $$ issues reportedly on the table still are transitional stuff like amnesty buyouts to allow teams to fit within the cap.

I'm sure if there was a top end goalie available Burke would be interested.

i dont disagree at all. however, to me that doesnt justify taking on luongo's contract. if he were signed for 3 or 4 years i would be all for it..

burke has done a nice job keeping the leafs away from burdens like that... would rather see him pay for a guy like kiprusoff (if available) then assume the luongo contract

Which is a lot better than Reimer ...who's about 35th in the league

I don't like either option. Lets ride the kids for this shortened season then add a vet - with a better contract - next summer.

maybe we can find the next Connolly or Komisarek again, or maybe a gem like Leino or Ward!...UFA season-it's a goldmine.
...but as you said, only if we secure the net with Luongo.

right there is a recipe for the Cup!

fair enough.. and i dont disagree but dont you think you could accomplish the same with another goalie?

someone not signed as long? or a FA veteran who might have a year or two left?

The contract Luongo carries is terrifying, no one can argue that.

I think it really boils down to the Leafs needing a goalie yet again. It's such a pain in the arse to have to try and trade for one AGAIN. I honestly think we have been burned more than anyone else in goalie trades recently.

The contract is horrible, and it could be a Burden but if Burke could get kipper....that would be alright too. But I cannot see that happening.

Lou's contract is horrible...no denying that.
But its not your money and the average cap hit isn't that bad...its just the length.

If they could bring the same result...of course. But I dont see any FA goalies with Lou's talent and acquiring one with a better contract length will cost us more in picks and youth.

Im on the fence about Lou....but if playoffs are the goal...he's a step in the right direction at a cheaper rate.
